Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War receives a new Zombie mode with Outbreak in Season 2. It includes a total of five variations to play, four of which are completely new. The developers explain Outbreak in a new trailer and a blog post.
What is Outbreak? The upcoming mode Outbreak has been confirmed for some time now. It has been established that Outbreak will be larger than the two previous Zombie maps, “Die Maschine” and “Firebase Z”.
Known features include vehicles to traverse the vast map, as well as new enemies and objectives. Instead of fighting Nazis, you will battle pumped-up, undead Soviets in Outbreak. Now there is detailed information about the new content.
Outbreak launches with Season 2 of Cold War on February 25, 2021.
New Missions in the Zombie Mode
What kind of missions are there? Outbreak operates differently from previous Zombie modes. You will receive a task at the beginning that you must complete. This will be shown to you with a star on the map. Underneath are four new missions:
- Defend: You need to acquire an intact sample of the infected’s genetic code. To do this, you must protect a device while zombies attack you in hordes.
- Escort: Highly advanced rovers must find a dimensional portal, and you need to help. Escort the device to its destination and defend it from attackers.
- Retrieve: Harvesters produce crystals from the aetherium in the atmosphere that you need to collect. To do this, you must carry canisters from the harvesters to rockets. But be careful: while carrying the canisters, you are significantly slowed down and cannot use any weapons.
- Eliminate: Particularly strong enemies (“High Value Targets”) are equipped with a tracking device and must be killed. They are protected by many smaller enemies that you either need to eliminate first – or you quickly take out the target, and then you automatically defeat the wave.
There are no predefined paths for any of these objectives. When you start, you can explore the map at will, discover secrets, or collect loot.
Is there also a classic mode? Yes, the “Holdout” mode is based on the classic Zombie mode of Cold War. You need to destroy a large crystal that continuously attracts zombies, preventing you from completing your mission.
Once you have completed a task, you can either disappear or find better rewards through a portal. However, you will have to defeat stronger opponents as well.
Jetpack Zombies and Vehicles – The New Content
What else is new? In addition to the new modes, more content is coming. The trailer shows new enemies: a heavily armored zombie with a jetpack and a flamethrower, as well as a sort of skeleton mage.
Additionally, there will be new weapons and content that are set to release with Season 2 of CoD Cold War. In our special, you can find all the information about Season 2.
You will apparently also receive a minigun that has already been confirmed as a new killstreak for Season 2. Vehicles will also be controllable in Outbreak; two of them are already known.
Instead of vehicles, there are jump pads on the map that can be unlocked for 500 essence. After jumping, you can navigate over long distances with the parachute and even collect essence in flight to offset the costs.
What vehicles are there? The trailer shows three different vehicles, although it is still unclear whether they will all be playable. They are:
- a regular car for four people – the whole team
- a jeep, also for four people, which apparently can take a bit more damage
- a snowmobile that resembles a jet ski and apparently can only carry two people
The trailer shows C4 being attached to a jeep to repurpose it as a weapon. The vehicles can thus be of much more use than just transporting you across the map.
More Upgrades for Your Weapons and Skills
As another innovation, two new aetherium crystals are coming to the game: Refined and Flawless. You can use them to upgrade your skills to levels four and five.
More details will be provided in a guide later this week, as promised by the developers in the official blog.
