At the Game Awards 2025, the creators of Total War announced a new title in their well-known strategy game series, and this time it delves into the dark future of Warhammer 40,000. The trailer already provides first info.
This is the state of Total War and Warhammer:
- Warhammer 3 is by far the largest Total War on Steam with well over 30,000 players every month according to steamcharts. Place 2, Rome II, follows with about 8,000, while the rest falls far behind.
- Despite some issues with DLCs, Total War: Warhammer 3 is therefore one of the best strategy games ever on Steam and is still growing.
- Recently, the developers announced a new DLC that is set to be released in 2026. Now the next Warhammer entry for Total War is here.
This has now been announced: At the Game Awards 2025, Total War: Warhammer 40k was presented as the latest game in the series, after Creative Assembly had previously already announced a new historical title with Medieval 3.
On stage was actor David Harbour, most of you probably know him as Chief Hopper from Stranger Things or as Hellboy (watchable on YouTube). Harbour identifies himself as a huge fan of tabletop games like Warhammer and promises: He will also appear in the game. What role he plays is still unknown.
Thanks to the new engine, Total War: Warhammer 40k will be playable not only on PC but also on PS5 and Xbox at launch. There is no release date yet, and more information is expected on December 16, 2025, and later in 2026. However, the trailer reveals some content:
Four factions (and one more) with full customization
The trailer features not only a nice cinematic but also some gameplay, including features that have never been seen in Total War before. An Imperial Cruiser bombards a planet from orbit, Space Marines land in Drop Pods and engage directly in battle.
The battlefield itself clearly looks like Total War, albeit with much more destruction and environment. Instead of an open field with a few forests, there are cities with streets, houses, and ruins. There is already information about the playable factions. They will include:
- Space Marines
- the Astra Militarum, the army of the Imperium
- Aeldari, or Eldar, the once mightiest species in the galaxy
- and Orks, who are actually just very angry mushrooms
Additionally, Chaos Space Marines are expected to appear later, although there is no concrete information yet on when that will be. However, there will not be a Blood Pack, the official blog post states: Blood and slaughter are part of Warhammer 40,000, without that one cannot depict the world.
In the overview, various planets are also visible, one of which is being destroyed by an Exterminatus in the background. Such attacks are said to be possible, but we cannot yet say how much this will play out as a gameplay element.
Especially for fans of the tabletop, it will be exciting that you can fully customize your armies. You can not only choose which equipment and abilities your units receive, but you can also name the war packs and equip them with various colors and emblems – almost as if you were painting your miniatures.
