Currently, hackers have the ability to spawn treasure chests in the online world of Red Dead Redemption 2. Looting these chests allegedly leads to bans – but not just for the modders themselves. Hackers shamelessly exploit this to trap innocent players who open the chests. Because whoever opens the chest allegedly gets banned.
How does the treasure chest hack work – what should I watch out for?
What kind of hack is this? As IGN reports, the “Treasure Chest Spawner” was released on January 22, 2020. And that as an update for an already existing mod menu by modder zJanny. Mod menus give players in games like Red Dead Online a selection of various cheats that they can activate at the push of a button. Such as God Mode, the spawning of objects like boats, and also annoying explosions and teleportations that drive other players crazy.
With this spawner, players can teleport treasure chests filled with gold into the online world. Looting these will credit the gold amount to the player picking it up.
At the release of the Treasure-Chest-Spawn feature, modder jZanny stated right away that he didn’t know if this cheat would be detected by Rockstar Games and lead to bans.
Around February 15, users of the cheat forum reported that they had been banned for using the mod menu, especially for spawning treasure chests. It was suspected that Rockstar Games had been closely monitoring those who used the treasure chest cheat – or simply those who opened the chests.
Exactly this fate is exploited by hackers. One user claims: “I spawned the gold chests in busy areas to try to get others to open them.”
What do the innocent banned players say?
One player on Reddit writes in a thread from February 22 that his account was banned. He doesn’t know exactly why, but suspects it is because he opened a treasure chest without having an active treasure map. He suspects a modder spawned it.
The chests kept spawning and I left the session. When I tried to get back in, it said my account was banned until March 17.

The IGN author “Chris Priestman” was contacted on Twitter by a user who had also been banned in Red Dead Online. He too had opened such a treasure chest.
