By now, you can buy the Steam Deck. Bungie has stated that you should not play Destiny 2 on the device, or you will be banned.
With Witch Queen, a brand new expansion for Destiny 2 has been released. However, if you are now thinking about playing the latest expansion on your Steam Deck, you may be disappointed.
For the developers of Destiny 2 have now stated that their game will not be supported on the Steam Deck and even threaten with a ban.
Anyone playing Destiny 2 on the wrong hardware risks a ban
This is what Bungie says: In the official FAQ for Destiny 2, Bungie has commented on the Steam Deck. In the corresponding section, the developers write:
Destiny 2 is not supported for play on the Steam Deck or on a system using Proton from Steam Play, unless Windows is installed and running. Players attempting to launch Destiny 2 on the Steam Deck via SteamOS or Proton may not access the game and will be returned to their game library shortly after.
Players attempting to circumvent Destiny 2’s incompatibility will be subject to a game ban.
If you have already purchased the Steam Deck to play the new expansion “Witch Queen,” you may initially be disappointed. Only if you have gone through the effort of installing Windows on the Steam Deck will you avoid a ban.
What is Proton anyway? Valve does not use Windows on the Steam Deck, but rather an operating system called SteamOS. This had sparked discussions after the announcement, about what games can actually be played on the device.
For SteamOS is based on a Linux system. Proton is used here to make Windows games run on Linux. Certain programs (so-called runtime environments) from Windows do not run on Linux. You can read more about how this works on MeinMMO:
Other multiplayer games are not supported on the Steam Deck either
What about other multiplayer games? Many other multiplayer games are also not supported on the Steam Deck. However, this could change in the future, as the Steam Deck team has already stated that they will continue to work on the device and want to bring many games to the Steam Deck.
