Borderlands 3 was released in September 2019. It’s about time you got acquainted with the new playable characters!
What classes are there? True to the Borderlands series, there will again be four different playable characters in Borderlands 3. Borderlands 3 will be released on September 13, 2019, for PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4.
Each character in BL3 symbolizes a class with different play styles and abilities. You cannot choose character and class separately. The respective protagonist is the class with which you will progress through the game.
While other characters from the Borderlands universe will appear in BL3, they will likely only be as NPCs.

These are the new characters
In Borderlands 3, you can choose between four different classes. What we know about the new characters and the story can be read here.
Moze – The Gunner
This is what Moze can do: Moze commands a mech she has named ‘Iron Bear’. The mech constructs itself around Moze when called. This makes her more mobile than other gunners in the Borderlands series, who usually dealt with static turrets.
An interesting detail is that a teammate can jump onto the mech and take over the turret on Iron Bear’s head. This places an emphasis on teamwork, making Moze equally more effective.
Amara – The Siren
This is what Amara can do: Amara represents the Siren of Borderlands 3. Sirens are women with mysterious powers. Unlike her predecessor Sirens Lilith and Maya, Amara can summon additional arms. Therefore, she is more suited for close combat.
These are Amara’s abilities: Amara can only equip one ability at a time and can only augment it. In addition to her three starting skills, she unlocks further alternative abilities.
- Phaseslam: The Siren jumps into the air and slams her astral arms down to the ground.
- Phasecast: Amara fires a projection that deals damage to enemies in its path.
- Phasegrasp: With this ability, Amara can trap an enemy in a magical fist that emerges from the ground.
Additionally, Amara’s alternative abilities are often enhanced versions of her starting skills. As a result, they often have a longer cooldown:
- Fracture: This skill causes multiple fists to erupt from the ground, dealing damage to enemies in a certain radius.
- Downfall: The Siren jumps into the air and fires a beam at enemies before unleashing her Phaseslam.
- Reverberation: Here, Amara sends out a projection, similar to Phasecast, whose damage increases with each enemy hit.
- Deliverance: This skill fires a projection that launches homing elemental rockets whenever enemies are hit.
- Tandava: A projection that explodes upon hitting an enemy.
- The Eternal Fist: With this skill, an enemy is trapped like in a Phasegrasp. If the trapped enemy dies, the effect can leap to up to three nearby enemies.
- Ties that Bind: Also a Phasegrasp, which distributes the damage to additional enemies when the trapped target is hit.
- Fist Over Matter: An alternative Phasegrasp where fists strike nearby enemies of the trapped enemy.
FL4K – The Beastmaster
This is what FL4K can do: FL4K is somewhat like the hunter of the group, as he can command various beasts. He can summon three different companions, including a Skag. It is still unclear whether the Beastmaster can have only one companion at a time or summon all three.
Zane – The Operative
This is what Zane can do: Zane bears some resemblance to Zer0 from Borderlands 2. Zane can place decoys to lure enemies. He also has various useful gadgets at his disposal, such as an attack drone that supports him in battle.
These are Zane’s abilities: Zane can equip two skills, the only one of the four new characters to do so. However, he has to forgo his grenade slot.
Zane’s skills can be upgraded or altered with up to two augmentations. However, the character does not unlock any further abilities.
- Barrier: With this ability, Zane places a shield that blocks damage from enemies and additionally increases the weapon damage of Zane and his friends as they shoot through it. The shield can also be carried by Zane, but then it is smaller.
- SNTNL: This skill deploys a drone that automatically attacks enemies and can be directed towards specific targets by Zane.
- Digi-Clone: Zane creates a hologram of himself that distracts enemies and even attacks them. The hologram can be upgraded to throw grenades, an ability that the character otherwise has to forgo.
