The Blizzard authorities have surprisingly announced new esports events for World of Warcraft . Specifically: for WoW Cataclysm Classic. There will even be an official competition between raid guilds. Who would have thought that after all these years?
Why is this announcement remarkable? The Blizzard authorities have organized esports events for World of Warcraft many times in the past, with the Mythic Dungeon International (MDI) and the Arena World Championship (AWC) taking place annually for some time now.
However, when it comes to competitive events for raid enthusiasts, the community has always been left to its own devices. Blizzard often only provided accompanying tweets or mentions on official channels for the World-First races.
What has Blizzard announced for Cataclysm Classic? For the remake of the Cataclysm expansion, there will be a competition for speedrun guilds called “Challenge of the Dragon Slayers”. Additionally, a PvP arena tournament is planned.
Challenge of the Dragon Slayers
What do I need to know about this event? The event starts on Saturday, June 8, 2024. The participants from the pro guilds Progress and None of the Above will dive into the dungeons of Cataclysm with new characters that have an item level of 346, in order to prepare themselves as best as possible for the second day.
On Sunday, June 9, 2024, the teams will then enter the three Cataclysm raids: Bastion of Twilight, Throne of the Four Winds, and Bastion of the Dragon. The guild that defeats all the bosses there first will receive “the lion’s share of $50,000 prize money.”

Arena Tournament for Cataclysm Classic
What about the PvP tournament? The 3vs3 matches in the Cataclysm arenas will take place from June 14 to June 16, 2024. According to Blizzard, the participants will include the best players from Europe and North America. Matches will be played in a double elimination format.

- All matches during the tournament will be played as “Best-3-of-5”. The final match between the top two teams will be a single “Best-4-of-7” match. There will be no double finale.
