The sandbox MMORPG Black Desert Online offers you a huge ocean that you can sail with ships. However, not much is currently happening there. But a new update is supposed to change that soon.
What does the new update contain? The new update titled “The Great Expedition” is entirely focused on the content in the ocean. Included are:
- Winds and currents that are supposed to provide a more realistic sailing experience.
- A new goods exchange that is supposed to make trading with small islands more interesting.
- New ships and also a ship crew.
- The new boss Khan, located in the eye of the Great Ocean.
The main reason for the update, according to the developers, is that although the ocean is huge, it is barely used by many players. This should change with the Great Expedition.
When will the new update be released? The big ocean update for Black Desert will be released on October 23. It follows the Manos update from September. The patch for the overhaul of the ocean was already released in Korea in September.
The BDO versions for PS4 and Xbox One are still significantly behind the PC in the West and will probably receive the update at the earliest in 2020.
New ships and what you need to know about them
How does the new sailing work? With the Great Expedition, winds and currents are introduced into the game. These can hinder you or bring you faster to your destination.
On board your ship, you will receive an overview of the current conditions:
The influences will become greater the further you move away from the coast. To perfectly set your sails with the wind, they can now be reefed or set, just like on a real ship.
What new ships are coming with the update? Previously, the best ships one could own were the Epheria sailing boat and the Epheria frigate. This is supposed to change with the new update, and several new ships will be added.
It starts with the fact that you now begin with the Bartali sailing boat. From this, you can choose either combat or trading ships and upgrade them as shown in the image below:
How are the ships built? The new Bartali sailing boat can be obtained at the tavern in Velia for 10 million silver, and unlike the old version, it can be repaired.
The Epheria sailing boat and the Epheria frigate can either be upgraded directly to a new ship or simply improved. The latter is cheaper but only provides additional cannons and better control over them as a captain.
The largest ships, the Epheria carracks, can now carry up to 18 cannons and contain 50 cabins for a sailing crew:
- The Advance can carry the most cargo (16,500 LT) and has the most inventory slots (40).
- The Valor, on the other hand, reloads the fastest (12 seconds) and is thus better suited for combat.

What happens until the update in BDO? Until October 23, there is still the hunting season running in the MMORPG. In this, you can complete various events and secure rewards.
