Jay “Sinatraa” Won switched from being a professional player in the Overwatch League to the new competitor Valorant some time ago. He seems to be doing quite well now. He has already won two tournaments with his team, which is now ranked 3rd among the most successful Valorant teams.
Who is the player? Sinatraa is one of the youngest professionals who has played in the Overwatch League (currently 20 years old). He even had to sit on the sidelines for a while because he hadn’t reached the minimum age at that time. In the league, he played for the San Francisco Shock and was regarded as the best player in the league with two MVP titles.
In May, however, Sinatraa switched from Overwatch to Valorant, which was still in beta at that time. Blizzard was disappointed with the decision but could understand it.
There have already been several tournaments in Valorant, many from the community and other organizers, but also official ones. In them, Sinatraa now plays for the team Sentinels, which he co-founded, and celebrates several successes with them.
Two Tournament Victories, Third Most Successful Team
This is how Sinatraa and the Sentinels are doing: After a rather weak start, the Sentinels won their first Ignition Series in July, the official tournaments hosted by Valorant developer Riot. There, they defeated the eSports veteran Cloud 9 with 3:1 and won $10,000.
Subsequently, there was another victory against Team SoloMid in the Summer Cup of another organization and a second place at the FaZe Clan Invitational in early August. Most recently, the Sentinels secured first place in the Pop Flash on August 30th, winning $25,000.
The team is currently ranked third among the most successful Valorant teams, behind Team SoloMid and G2 Esports, the “Real Madrid” of eSports (via liquipedia). Both are teams that originally gained fame in the LoL sector.
The Sentinels have already earned $54,000. However, Sinatraa himself stated that while he earns less salary in Valorant, he can overall earn more than in Overwatch.
What does the future look like? The tournaments of Valorant are slowly ramping up and more teams are participating. However, this has also led to some unpleasant events, such as obviously cheating pros in tournaments, who are quickly removed as well.
Several tournaments are already planned for the coming weeks and months, most of which are qualifier tournaments where new teams can qualify for promotion to the professional leagues. Meanwhile, the hype surrounding Valorant is somewhat decreasing. After the strong start on Twitch during the beta, Valorant has now recorded a significant drop on Twitch.
