The Light and Your Map Show You the Way
The game world of Elden Ring offers 6 large regions filled with treasures and dungeons. Additionally, there is a main story that revolves around reaching the foot of the great Elden tree, collecting the great runes, and ascending to the Elden Lord or Lady.
Along your way, you must defeat a number of main bosses. The sheer amount of content and the scale of the game world can be somewhat overwhelming. If you focus solely on the main story, though, the game provides you with a tool.
Story Players Follow the Guidance of Grace
This is how you find your way: When you find a site of grace, you see a glowing trail floating in one direction. This trail leads you to the next main objective in the region. So, at least you always have a rough direction in mind.
However, you still cannot avoid exploring the game world and finding paths yourself.
Here you can learn about which region you should visit in which order:
Without Your Map, Nothing Happens in the Between Lands
This is why it is important: Maps are a common feature in games with large worlds. However, in Elden Ring’s Between Lands, the map plays a more central role than one is usually familiar with.
This is how the map works:
- There are no conventional markers like question marks like you know from The Witcher 3.
- To mark a location on the map, you must first visit it.
- You can also mark specific locations with various symbols.
- With markers, you can also draw routes in steps of 1 to 5 to set a path for yourself.
- If you uncover an area, you can see the geographical structures and buildings, making it easier to discover interesting places.
At the beginning, only a small part of the map is revealed. You must find fragments in the respective areas to progressively uncover the map.
How do I find such fragments? Even if the sections are covered, you can at least see them roughly as you progress. Keep an eye on your map until you can spot a small pillar:
At this pillar, you will find the map piece for the surrounding area and can navigate much easier now.
You should always use the map to orient yourself and find important places, as all dungeons and other interesting locations reward you with valuable items or lead you to new NPCs.
On the next page, crafting continues, among other things.
