The second season of the successful anime Dandadan has premiered on Netflix and Crunchyroll. However, besides action-packed fights, it is particularly the food that is causing a stir.
What’s up with the food? In Dandadan, there are several scenes where the characters eat together. This is also true in episode 6 of the current second season. However, the pot around which the group gathers is not filled with coarsely drawn cel-shading snacks – instead, the animators simply took a photo of real food and integrated it into the 2D environment.
Okay, but… why? Some fans suspect that the food drawings by mangaka Tatsu in the original work were so detailed that studio Science Saru could only use real food to adequately adapt the original (via Vida Extra).

Some users, however, point out that the manga panel could already be a photo, simply overlaid with a filter, or at least a photo that has been redrawn here.
The decision of the animators might indicate less about being overwhelmed by the adaptation but rather a kind of visual gag, often found in cartoon series like SpongeBob or Gumball. However, the result is certainly memorable.
