With the first trailer and the official reveal of Battlefield 2042, we finally know where the game’s journey is headed. One reason for skepticism for many is that the shooter has also been announced for the last-gen consoles PS4 and Xbox One. How significant will the differences to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S be?
That’s what makes it so exciting: Many players are worried due to the announcement for PS4 and Xbox One. They fear that the new Battlefield could be held back technically by the older systems and may not fully utilize the capabilities of the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
With the reveal of the latest Battlefield installment, we now know how big the differences will ultimately be. These mainly concern the size of the maps and the number of players.
However, these differences alone could mean that Battlefield 2042 on the old consoles may become a very different shooter. We summarize what is already known about the differences.

Smaller maps and significantly fewer players per match on Xbox One and PS4
That’s why Battlefield 2042 will be a different game on last-gen: During a presentation, the Battlefield developers from DICE confirmed that Battlefield 2042, despite being released for the old console generation, was primarily designed from the outset for the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
Therefore, up to 128 players will be able to play on the map. However, Xbox One and PS4 must settle for a maximum of up to 64 players. In total, only half the number of players will be available on the maps of Battlefield 2042 on last-gen.
Moreover, there is the biggest difference between the platforms. The maps of Battlefield 2042 are said to be extremely large according to known information. Significantly larger than what is known from previous Battlefield titles. However, this will only be true for the versions for PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PS5.
The maps on PS4 and Xbox One will only be a portion of the new maps and will be significantly smaller.
Will the last-gen version be worse because of this? Half the players per match and significantly smaller maps – that doesn’t sound great at first. How this will affect the final game remains to be seen. DICE promises that other features like “Levolution” will also be included.
What does “Levolution” mean? This refers to a feature in Battlefield 2042 that veterans may already know from Battlefield 4. The maps will change due to external events like tornadoes or sandstorms during the match. In Battlefield 2042, however, this is supposed to happen in a much more organic way and feel less scripted.
The impact on the gameplay could be drastic. In the reveal trailer, for example, you can see a whirlwind that tosses players and vehicles around like toys and can change the course of a match.
When does Battlefield 2042 come out? The shooter is set to be released on October 22. Those who purchase the Ultimate Edition can start a week earlier – on October 15. If you are subscribed to the “EA Play” service, you will have access to a 10-hour trial starting from October 15.
Will there be an open beta? There is supposed to be an open beta, but no release date is known yet.
