In Baldur’s Gate 3 you can combine any class with any race without getting negative effects. However, some races are still worth it when you play them with specific classes. We’ll show you which combinations those are and why they become better.
Does the race matter for the class? Yes and no. In general, the individual races do not provide significant bonuses that should influence your decision. You can use any race without having to fear being “weaker”.
Nevertheless, some races offer minimal differences. The Dragonborn, for example, differ depending on their appearance and element. Drow, on the other hand, have better darkvision than most other races.
Depending on which race you choose, you can benefit from one or other additional features.

Wizard: School of Conjuration as High Elf
Why is this combo so good? High elves as wizards with the focus on the school of conjuration make you powerful fighters. Moreover, the race of high elves allows you to choose one additional spell from your wizard spell list. So it’s worth getting to know your magical side as a high elf.
Druid: Circle of the Moon as Wood Elf
Why is this combo so good? Wood elves are born perfect warriors for stealth maneuvers and are also fast on their feet. Combined with the Circle of the Moon from the druid class, you transform into mystical beings and can defend your territory on any terrain.
Fighter: Mystic Warrior as Githyanki
Why is this combo so good? As Githyanki, you inherently possess talents in weapon combat and experience with light and medium armor. Githyanki also have access to some spells. Combining this with the sub-class “Mystic Warrior” makes you a fighter who is more skilled in magic than others. This not only boosts your attacks but also enhances your defensive values.
Barbarian: Path of the Berserker as Gold Dwarf
Why is this combo so good? Dwarves naturally have a stronger resistance to poisons and are familiar with great axes. Gold dwarves also receive more hit points per level. Combining this with the barbarian class and the sub-class “Path of the Berserker” makes you a dangerous melee warrior who can withstand more than most others.
Bard: College of Valor as Half-Elf
Why is this combo so good? The half-elf offers a variety of advantages with its innate talents. Darkvision, proficiency with various weapons, fast movement, and resistance to sleep magic. Additionally, with the College of Valor, you can assist your colleagues in battle and deal damage more frequently and effectively.
