The latest patch of Baldur’s Gate 3 is massive – very massive. There are so many improvements that you should rather perform a reinstall.
Update February 16, 12:45 PM: Patch 6 went live on February 16, 2024, at around 12:00 PM. You can download the update now. If you do not have enough free disk space for the installation (150 GB), it is advisable to delete the game and reinstall it completely to download the fully patched version.
Original message: Although Baldur’s Gate 3 has been released for over half a year now, the developers at Larian Studios still seem to be taking no breaks. Every few weeks, a new, extensive patch is released that further enhances the game of the year 2023. Just in time for Valentine’s Day, Patch 6 is on the agenda, which brings some improved kiss animations.
But that is just a small part of what awaits players in Patch 6 – because the update is so large that the developers say: Better reinstall if your hard drive is too small.
The most important points at a glance:
- On PC and Steam Deck, you need 150 GB of free space for the patch.
- The Honour mode will be even harder.
- There are many “Quality of Life” improvements.
- Your character will be used more frequently in cutscenes.
- You can now switch active party members more easily.
Warning about Mega Patch: You really need a lot of storage space
The new patch of Baldur’s Gate 3 brings a total of 21 GB to the digital scale – but that is only a fraction of what the patch actually requires for installation. When you perform the update installation, there must be at least 150 GB of free space available on your hard drive (PC & Steam Deck), otherwise the installation cannot be completed.
If you do not have enough space on your hard drive, the developers recommend completely uninstalling the game in advance and directly downloading the patched version.
So far, Larian has not made any statements regarding the consoles – but it would probably be wise to clear a few more gigabytes of storage rather than too little.
Patch 6: The Biggest Changes
The most exciting highlights of Patch 6 are summarized here.
Easy switching of group members: Until now, swapping group members was a bit cumbersome. You had to talk to the character you wanted to leave behind and then approach the person who should accompany you. In Patch 6, one step is eliminated, as you can simply address the character who is supposed to join you now and make a selection of who must stay behind. This saves a lot of time and feels a bit smoother.
More dialogue time for your hero: With the patch, your character will be more often at the center of dialogues. The game will try to make your chosen hero the focal point of the dialogue and thus the primary speaker. Previously, it was often the character who came “too close” to a new scene that triggered the dialogue.
Better kissing throughout the game: Even though Larian placed a high value on romances in advance, the kiss animations sometimes seemed a bit awkward. Just in time for Valentine’s Day, most kiss animations have now been revised and ensured that the lips do actually touch. A bit more passion in the world of Faerûn is sure to please your avatar. Here’s how the improved kissing looks.
Honour Mode with legendary actions: Honour Mode is quite challenging anyway, but Larian wants to ramp it up a bit. There will be new legendary actions that only exist in this game mode. These are likely new boss abilities with particularly devastating effects. We’ll probably only find out what they look like with the release of the patch.
What else is in Patch 6? Apart from the highlights mentioned above, the patch is full of bug fixes and minor adjustments that should complete the gaming experience. Because even though Baldur’s Gate 3 has received extremely good ratings, there are still some bugs – some amusing, others annoying. These bug fixes also include the repair of two abilities, namely “Shield Bash” and “Rebuke of the Mighty,” which should now correctly trigger saving throws again.
Someone has tried to play Baldur’s Gate 3 as a cat – whether that was successful, you’ll find out here.
