In Baldur’s Gate 3, the Paladin class must fulfill specific obligations to retain their special abilities. The devout warriors must adhere to their oath. One player was determined to do this but ultimately failed.
This is what makes Paladins special in Baldur’s Gate 3:
- A Paladin in Baldur’s Gate 3 must choose one of 3 oaths they wish to swear during character creation. With these different oaths, the Paladin gains special abilities: auras, actions, spells.
- However, with the oaths come obligations: The Paladin is ultimately always required to help those in need, adhere to laws, and refrain from committing injustices.
- If the Paladin breaks their oath, they become an Oathbreaker and lose their abilities. They may choose to atone and renew their oath or become the “Oathbreaker,” a 4th hidden subclass of Paladin. Here we have a build for the Oathbreaker.
Paladin aimed to save every innocent
Here’s what a noble Paladin thought: On reddit, a user shared that they played a Paladin who had taken the Oath of Devotion: therefore, they needed to adhere to law and order, show courage and mercy.
They were determined to save everyone and be “the hero in shining armor”.
Paladin accidentally kills innocent with healing potion
This went wrong: In Act 1, our brave hero entered a cave beneath the Druid’s Grove and fought some goblins there, whom he defeated.
On the ground lay an unconscious dwarf with one hit point. The noble knight had no healing spells left, so he aimed to throw a healing potion at the dwarf’s body.
But just as the bottle was flying, he realized he had made a terrible mistake. Due to a skill called Tavern Brawl, the Paladin threw every item with a lot of force, using part of his strength: while the healing potion flew, he understood that this also applied to healing potions.
To his horror, his holy Paladin, who had saved so many people, accidentally killed the unconscious dwarf, becoming a murderer and thereby breaking his oath.
Here’s the reaction: The thread on reddit has 8,000 upvotes and 925 comments. People are laughing their heads off at the noble knight. One can imagine failed Paladins sitting in a support group sharing how they broke their oath:
- “I hope you tell your story to the other Oathbreakers when everyone shares their tragic backstory.”
- “I killed a cartload of orphans. What about you?”
Others, however, say they merely deviated from the “noble path” of the Paladin because they were seduced by a certain drow lady:
