Baldur’s Gate 3 is a cooperative role-playing game for up to 4 players. MeinMMO explains how to play together in multiplayer, how to assign NPC control, and whether romances still work in coop.
What does the coop mode of Baldur’s Gate 3 offer? In coop, you can experience the entire story of Baldur’s Gate 3 together. Each additional player takes the place of an NPC. You can play online on different devices or offline in couch coop when playing on console.
All information to start a coop round
You can either start a coop session directly in the main menu under the item ‘Multiplayer’ or open an existing save via the ‘Session’ menu for others. Just invite friends, for example via Steam. Additionally, Baldur’s Gate 3 offers a game browser if you want to join strangers.
If you play Baldur’s Gate 3 on PS5 or Xbox Series X, you can start a local split-screen. To do this, the co-player simply has to join an ongoing (or new) game by pressing the X button or A button. For Series S, this feature is currently not possible. If you are close enough together, the split-screen merges for better overview into a single image.
No, players on PC, PS5, and Xbox cannot currently play together. However, there is crossplay between Steam, GOG, and Mac. You can find more about this in our Guide to crossplay and cross-save in Baldur’s Gate 3. Crossplay between all platforms will be available with Patch 8 in 2025.
The coop is designed for up to 4 players. A group always consists of a maximum of 4 characters, regardless of whether they are NPCs or player characters.
The host, meaning the player that everyone joins, can save and load the game – even independently of whether all players are still present. If in doubt, you can just kick other players out.
If you want to continue a round that has been started together, the same host has to save and load the game. The host can also continue playing alone; however, you as a pure co-player do not have access to the save.
All about the process of coop rounds
No, you can move, act, and die completely separately.
Any player can interact with NPCs and objects to start a dialogue. If it is not ‘private’, other players can listen to the conversation via the portraits on the left or by clicking on the speaking characters. When options are available, everyone listening gets to cast their vote. However, the conversation leader decides alone.
In coop, you can easily assign companions to a player. This can be done either directly through the session menu or by drag & drop via the portraits on the left side of the screen.
You share loot in Baldur’s Gate 3. If player A loots something, player B cannot pick it up. However, you can push anything into the inventory of nearby players and freely move objects back and forth. What you do with this information is up to you.
Romances in Multiplayer
Yes, this is also possible in multiplayer. However, it should be noted that you cannot interact with characters who are traveling with your co-player. There are several characters in the game with whom you can form a relationship.
A relationship between player characters is not possible. The characters cannot interact with each other anyway.
You can decide when creating a coop game whether you prefer to play Origin characters or create your own character. Origin characters have a deeper story, while your own character offers more freedom in gameplay. You can find more about this here: Baldur’s Gate 3: All 12 classes at a glance – Which one suits you?
