The question of who has the upper hand among players, Playstation or Xbox, continues with the next-gen consoles PS5 and Xbox Series X. Even though some criticize Sony’s poor marketing for the PlayStation 5, they advise to simply wait for the sales figures.
What’s the problem? The unveiling of the next-gen consoles is going a bit slow for some. Especially Sony is taking its time with the Playstation 5. In a rather dry video, Lead System Architect Mark Cerny explained the console in March. But players wanted to see gameplay. Many accuse Sony of poor marketing for the PS5 in this context.
Currently, we don’t even know what the PS5 looks like. Only the DualSense controller has been shown. There are no hints on the price, no games have been shown, and other than “end of 2020”, we know nothing about the release date.
In contrast, Microsoft has already presented more with the Xbox Series X. The design of the console is known, and there has already been next-gen gameplay, including from Assassin’s Creed Valhalla.
Therefore, some gamers are slowly losing patience with Sony.
Sony wants the sales figures of the PS5 to speak for themselves
What does Sony think about this? On Twitter, Bloomberg’s Takashi Mochizuki asked if Sony is happy with how the marketing of the PS5 is being handled. The PS5 seems to lag behind the Xbox Series X in this regard.
In response, Sony said that they always consider such matters strategically but do their best. Moreover, they suggest that people should wait for the sales figures of the PS5 before forming a judgment.
What does this mean? Sony refers to the sales figures of the Playstation 4 with this statement. Even now, with the PS5 announced and due to be released this year, the current model, PS4, is still selling excellently. The Playstation 4 has sold 110.4 million units so far. Just from January to March 2020, Sony sold 1.5 million units of the PS4.
Sony thus assumes that this situation will repeat itself with the PS5. And that, despite the fact that the console is technically slightly behind the Xbox Series X – at least on paper.
Whether that will really happen remains to be seen. The first gameplay of a demo of the new Unreal Engine 5 shown on the PS5 certainly gives hope that we can expect stunning games. And it is precisely these games that many believe are crucial for a console’s success. It’s about time that Sony shows something here.
