Epic Games has announced an offer to PC game developers that is hard to refuse. Anyone who brings a PC game exclusively to the Epic Game Store and not, for example, to Steam or the Xbox Game Pass, will receive 100% of the earnings for 6 months.
What kind of offer is this?
- The program is called “Epic First Run” and was announced today, on August 23rd, by Epic Games. Those who participate in the program will receive 100% of the sales revenue from the game’s sales for 6 months. Epic Games is waiving its 12% share during this period.
- The offer applies to developers who want to release a game on or after October 16th, exclusively in the Epic Game Stores.
- They must refrain from publishing their game on PC through third-party stores (like Steam) or third-party streaming services (like Xbox Game Pass). On consoles, developers can do whatever they want.
Red Dead Redemption was not available on Steam for months back then:
Developers receive 100% of earnings for 6 months if they forgo Steam
What happens next? After the first 6 months, developers will then receive 88% of the revenue, while Epic retains 12%.
Then developers can also bring their game to Steam or Xbox Game Pass.
Which stores are excluded? Platforms like Humble Store, Green Man Gaming, or a first-party store of the developer are allowed.
Who do they want to meet then? Epic Games evidently wants to launch a new attack against Steam: They take 30% of the revenue.
It is known that Epic Games is willing to spend a lot of money to fight the giant Steam: In April 2021, we reported that Epic Games had already incurred a loss of $300 million in the battle against Steam.
Why is this such a problem for many gamers? Most PC gamers have their game collection on Steam, in one place. There, there are achievements and forums where they can discuss the games.
The Epic Games Store is hated for keeping “exclusive” titles away from Steam, such as Red Dead Redemption 2 or Borderlands 3.
For many gamers, the Epic Game Store is just a place to regularly pick up free titles that they don’t end up playing.
The first reactions on Twitter are partly negative. “Disgusting” is the behavior of Epic Games, it is said. Another user quips: “100% of 0 is still 0.”
In the past, the Epic Games Store has repeatedly sought direct conflict with Steam.
According to Epic CEO Tim Sweeney, there is only a chance to challenge Steam’s monopoly through exclusive titles.

Sweeney rejects that platforms demand 30% of the revenue. He believes it hinders development.
