A young man is serious: a button camera, a transmitter in his shoe, an AI, and a mini earpiece are supposed to grant him access to the university. But now he is in jail. What happened? The accusations and the story behind it.
Who cheated and how? The events highlighted by Arstechnica take place in southwestern Turkey, in the province of Isparta. A male candidate for university admission participated in the required entrance exam called TYT. Without passing this, there is no way to get into a Turkish university.
Not an alleged fraud, but an art project is the creator of hundreds of USB sticks that protrude from walls:
Worthy of an agent – albeit an awkward one
How did he allegedly cheat? These are the accusations: The university applicant was wearing a miniature camera disguised as a button on his shirt during the exam. This camera transmitted a video recording of the exam questions and possible answers via a transmitter in the sole of his shoe to a phone, where an AI received the recording. It analyzed the handwriting, recognized the text, searched for the correct answer, and whispered it to him through a small earpiece in his ear.
What happened? He got caught because he was behaving suspiciously. The technology apparently worked perfectly, but the way he used it led to his downfall. Unfortunately, it was not reported exactly what behavior caused the young man to be discovered. Now he is waiting in jail for his trial.
We are not experts in Turkish law, but as the reports read, the offense he is accused of appears to carry quite heavy penalties. So he might end up behind bars for some time.
As part of the investigation, the police also arrested another person who is said to have assisted the alleged cheater. There was apparently a Plan B in case the AI failed. According to the information we have, this second suspect would have taken on the role of the transmitter via phone.
The police, meanwhile, seem to be even impressed by the method – although certainly not by the goal of cheating. They posted a video, which Mail Online shows you here. In it, they demonstrate the functionality of the elaborate method.
Artificial intelligence in all its forms can, however, do far more than just help people cheat. Some are even using it nowadays to achieve political success. For example, Steve Endacott, who acts as an extended arm of an AI to secure a seat in the UK Parliament. We have written his story and the AI that supports him here.
