An analyst has explained that the Xbox Series X price could be lower than that of the PS5. In the last price duel PS4 vs. Xbox One, Sony was ahead in price. This could change with PS5 and Xbox Series X.
Where do the information come from? Michael Pachter is an American analyst at the financial firm Wedbush Securities. Pachter’s focus is on video games, social and digital media, and electronics. He has been an analyst for nearly 38 years.
What does he say? Pachter stated in a conversation on YouTube that Microsoft is indeed ready and able to set the price significantly below that of the PS5. He says:
Microsoft has a strong balance sheet. If they reduce the price by $100 and want to subsidize the first 10 million, they will do so. I think they are just waiting for Sony to blink first, and then they will announce the price and release date. It will be Christmas 2020, so very likely in November and very likely $400.

So far, it has also been speculated that Sony will offer the PS5 cheaper than the Xbox Series X. Currently, it looks like Sony and Microsoft are watching each other and waiting for the other side to reveal something. An analysis firm estimated the price of the new consoles – a price that many buyers might like:

Xbox Series X and PS5 Price: Will Microsoft Undercut Sony?
It wouldn’t be the first time that Microsoft undercuts Sony on console price.
The Xbox 360 launched at €299 on December 2, 2005, significantly less than the competing PlayStation 3, which launched at €599. Sony later reduced the price of the Slim version to €299 – to also be competitive against the Xbox 360.
Nevertheless, the PS3 sold significantly worse than the PlayStation 2, which is still the best-selling console of all time.
But how were the prices for the PlayStation? We present them to you in detail.
The price of the PlayStation systems in overview
| System | Price | Release Date |
|---|---|---|
| PlayStation 1 | 599 DM (306 Euro) | September 29, 1995 |
| PlayStation 2 | 869 DM (444 Euro) | November 24, 2000 |
| PlayStation 3 | 599 Euro, Slim 299 Euro | March 23, 2007 |
| PlayStation 4 | 399 Euro | November 29, 2013 |
In contrast to the PlayStation, the Xbox system has only three models so far. Sony’s strongest competitor for the PlayStation 1 was not Microsoft, but Nintendo – especially after the joint cooperation for a gaming system fell apart.
The price of the Xbox systems in overview
| System | Price | Release Date |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox | €479; six weeks later Microsoft lowered the price to €299 | March 14, 2002 |
| Xbox 360 | €299 | December 2, 2005 |
| Xbox One | €499 | November 22, 2013 |
What do the numbers say? When comparing the prices and release dates of the old consoles, it becomes clear: Never before has the competition between PlayStation and Xbox been as intense as in the latest generation.
PlayStation 1 and Xbox or PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 were released with some distance (about 2 years) from each other. Here, the pricing was significantly more independent, as the immediate competition was not as strong.
In the case of PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, Sony released its PS4 a week after Microsoft and offered it about €100 cheaper: To this day, the PlayStation 4 has sold significantly better than the Xbox One.

PS5 and Xbox Series X: Release and Price Still Unknown
When it comes to price and release date, both manufacturers Sony and Microsoft remain tight-lipped and are watching each other. Pachter also believes that one is just waiting for the news from the competitor.
At the beginning of May, Microsoft at least presented some important games for the Xbox Series X in a stream. But many fans had hoped for more gameplay from the stream.
Sony has not shown any gameplay so far and remains tight-lipped otherwise. Many hope that Sony could at least soon present the final design of the PlayStation 5, which is still unknown in contrast to the Xbox Series X.
And while we eagerly wait for the price and the official release date of both new consoles, this could at least be advantageous for the PlayStation 4. MeinMMO explains why the PlayStation 4 could significantly increase in value compared to the PS5.
