Tonight, on August 23rd, at 8:00 PM, gamescom 2022 begins in Cologne. At the opening of the game event, more than 30 games and new trailers will be presented during the Opening Night Live. 15 games, which will receive world premieres for new trailers, are known. 21:59: The show was pretty much what one could expect: A two-hour trailer fireworks display. In retrospect, there were indeed some highlights if you like action RPGs. But there were no huge surprises that left one in awe.
The most applause went to:
- the big franchises like Dune and Harry Potter (Hogwarts Legacy)
- the genre favorites, such as Lies of P, which is inspired by Dark Souls
- and the beloved games that seem innovative, like Moonbreakers or the classic Return to Monkey Island
One can surely mention “The Lord of The Fallen” and “Atlas Fall”, which left a lasting impression.
21:57: Dead Island gets the deluxe treatment and is allowed to show 2 trailers. It flirts a bit with “God, are we cool and edgy”.
21:51: Keighley announces that they have been waiting a long time for the last game: a guy who looks like Lenny Kravitz wakes up in his room. Oh – and there are corpses everywhere. Outside, there are zombies.
The game is said to feature 6 different heroes with unique flair.
This is “Dead Islands 2” – coming February 3, 2023.
- The sequel to the zombie game Dead Island will be released for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S on February 3, 2023.
- While the first part took place on a real island, in Dead Island 2 you are trapped in California, which has been declared a quarantine zone by the US Army. The setting includes the cities of Los Angeles, San Francisco, and a still secret location
- In this action RPG, you play a character who has been bitten by one of the zombies and can utilize the zombie abilities for himself.
The survival game has been in development for 4 years.
New shooter from the ex-Battlefield creators “The Finals”
21:50: News from the people who left Battlefield. A big reveal is supposed to come in September. This is the teaser for the new game from “embark”. It was short but promising.
21:48: “The Outlast Trials” is announced as a “dark game” that hasn’t been heard from in a long time. Aggression levels rise slightly after Dorfromatik. It’s kind of like eating chocolate ice cream first and then a hot chili salsa sandwich with extra Tabasco.
- The survival horror game is the next Outlast game, which this time takes place during the Cold War.
- The cruel Murkoff Corporation abducts people to perform terrible brain surgery and mind control experiments on them. One of those people is you.
- The game will also offer multiplayer features, and you will fight your way through the corridors of the Murkoff facility together with your friends.
- The Outlast Trials will be released on Steam.
21:47: 4 Berlin students are brought on stage for Dorfromantik Switch. I believe any German who says anything against “Dorfromantik” will have his citizenship revoked.
21:45: A Korean is currently accepting the award for “the hottest PS5 game of gamescom”. Lies of P has of course won – “Dark Souls”-likes usually win these things. It somehow feels like he totally expected it and that it’s no big deal.
21:45: Smilegate shows Crossfire, which is a massive shooter in Asia that no one here in the West knows. They probably want to bring the “CS:GO of South Korea” back with a new version.
Crossfire X Babylon is set to be released on August 23.
21:44: My personal highlight so far: Lord of the Fallen and the Atlas game.
21:43: “Phantom Hellcat” gets the 30 seconds trailer treatment.
21:42: Fairytale shift into a game with a fantasy horror setting. It feels kind of like a really mean game. It’s called “Blacktail”. Coming this winter for PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC.
- Blacktail puts you in the world of Slavic myths and legends. Play as Yaga, a young girl accused of witchcraft and exiled from her home settlement.
- You fight with a bow and a combat glove and craft potions and recipes with the crafting system.
- Player decisions have an impact on the game world.
- The game will be released on Steam.
21:40: Warhammer 40,000 – our author Grothaus is getting restless again. He has an absolute penchant for it. 4-player co-op. It appears to be against Papa Nurgle and his Chaos demons. Warhammer 40k Darktide is set to release on November 30.
- In Warhammer 40,000: Darktide, you play as a convicted criminal who has the choice between death and more death with a chance of survival.
- The first-person shooter will be released on November 22 on Steam. It is supposed to come to Xbox Series X later.
21:35: A park simulation from Bandai Namco. Looks like Rollercoaster Tycoon. In the Twitch chat immediately: Switch game!
Here’s what we know about Park Beyond:
- Park Beyond is a simulation game where you can create the amusement park of your dreams without having to worry about pesky things like physical laws.
- You play as an architect who is to come up with the craziest attractions. In story mode, many colorful characters will support you and your ideas.
- The game is set to release in 2023 on Steam.
21:33: Hideo Kojima will be joining. Some people in the audience will faint. He is one of the last rockstars in gaming and strangely a good friend of Keighley.
He doesn’t have anything big to announce, except for a Spotify show.
21:31: An action RPG with a strong action focus looks exciting. It has this “you can stay in the air for 8 minutes if you’re good enough at Kung Fu” logic. The game is called “Where winds meet”.
Leya says: For this, there was applause from the audience after a long time.
Gotham Knights has a release date on October 21
21:26: Gotham Knights shows the villains in the trailer: The release date is also supposed to be “earlier than expected”: I see Harley Quinn there. Mister Freeze is also present. And that could be Deadshot. The classic Batman villains.
- The action game places you in the open world of Gotham City, which is devastated by the death of Bruce Wayne and Commissioner Gordon by criminals.
- You take on the roles of Batman’s students, Nightwing, Batgirl, Robin, and Red Hood, and face the worst villains of Gotham.
- In multiplayer mode, you can also beat up villains like Mr. Freeze or Penguin together with your friends.

21:25: Age of Empires 4 shows a trailer, promising 2 new “epic” civilizations.
21:23: An ambitious new role-playing game is coming from “Something Wicked Games”: The game is called “Wyrdsong”, but the trailer was very short.
21:19: We’ve likely officially reached the “SF part” of the show: Scars Above unfortunately can’t leave a really lasting impression.
- Scars Above is a sci-fi shooter that represents a mix between Metroid Prime and Returnal.
- You play as Kate Ward, a scientist who is part of the SCAR team.
21:18: A multiplayer game about “Killer Clowns from Outer Space”: It’s from the creators of “Friday the 13th The Game”, who are into trash. It’s called “Killer Clowns From Outer Space”.
The game is based on an American horror comedy from 1988.
21:15: “The Expanse” is a pretty cool SF series. Telltale developed a game for it. Somewhat unusual: the series is already finished. Oh, there’s Stephan Frost, the former frontman of WildStar. One of the smartest minds when he talks about MMOs.
Oh dear, there is Drummer: In the series, this is an emotionless badass character who always seems somehow unsatisfied with the overall situation and disappointed with everyone:
- The game is based on the eponymous sci-fi TV series on Amazon Prime and takes place hundreds of years in the future. However, the story of the game is set before the events of the series.
- You take on the role of the character Camina Drummer, known from the series, who faces a bloody mutiny on the spaceship Artemis. Your decisions affect the events in the game’s story.
- Gameplay takes place on spaceships and in outer space, where you float in zero gravity.
- Coming in summer 2023.
21:13: A sci-fi game presented from the first-person perspective with a voice-over narrative: Shipbreaker is set to release on September 20.
- Headspace: Shipbreaker is a space simulation on Steam, where you investigate old spaceships and solve their puzzles.
- The game is designed to deliver the best space feeling.
21:11: A “These games are also available” montage with 6 games at once, from PUBG to V Rising.
