The Mastermind

The Mastermind, also known as Albert Wesker, is the second killer from the “Resident Evil” universe and quite a unique case among killers. He has two quick lunge attacks, can infect survivors and slow them down while being able to injure multiple survivors with a single attack. However, this comes at a price: The Mastermind has a gigantic terror radius of 40 meters – that’s 8 meters more than most other killers. His movement speed is standard, and his size is classified as “average.”

Special Ability: Infectious Lunge – The Mastermind can harness the powers of the Uroboros virus. To do this, the special ability must be charged and then the attack button pressed. The Mastermind then lunges forward in the direction he is facing. During a brief window, players can realign themselves after the first lunge and move a bit before a second lunge can be triggered, covering a lot of distance. Each lunge consumes a charge that quickly recharges one after the other.

If a survivor is hit by the lunge, different things happen. First, every directly hit survivor is immediately infected with the virus. If the survivor is already infected, their infection increases.

If the Mastermind makes contact with a solid wall or an object while lunging at a survivor, he slams the survivor against it and deals additional damage. If the killer does not hit an object, he instead throws the survivor several meters away.

If the survivor is thrown against an object or a wall, they also take damage. If the survivor is thrown against another survivor, both take damage.

If the survivor is already fully infected when the killer collides with them against an object, the survivor is picked up directly and can be taken to a hook.

Survivors can heal from infection using healing sprays. The sprays are located in special crates and reveal the survivor’s position to the killer upon use. Sprays can be used multiple times, but the maximum usage is limited.

The lunge can also be used to climb over pallets quicker or vault through windows. In this case, the lunge ends with the crossing of the climbing opportunity, and a second lunge cannot be executed.

How to use Infectious Lunge correctly? The correct use of the lunge requires some practice, as the attack has a relatively long lead time during which it needs to be charged. Survivors can hear this and may try to run around corners. Often, it is more sensible to simply hope for a normal hit.

Also, always keep an eye on the interface. You can tell by the virus symbol of the survivors how infected they are. Once the infection is fully completed, the virus symbol glows red. Then you can capture survivors directly with a lunge.

The trick is to ensure that you always make survivors collide against a wall or at least throw them against an object. This not only deals damage but can also confuse the survivor player with the repositioning, giving you an advantage during the chase.

You really gain utility from the ability only if you practice the “Zig-Zag” movements, which can execute two rapid lunges in succession.

Pro
  • Extremely versatile killer with potential to injure multiple survivors
  • Playable well even without addons
  • Virus infection costs survivors a lot of time
Contra
  • Extremely high terror radius warns survivors early
  • Ability is difficult to master and sometimes still quite bugged
  • Virus infection can often be healed

Who is the Mastermind suitable for? The Mastermind is definitely a must for all fans of Resident Evil. Basically, it can be said that anyone who liked the playstyle of the Nemesis will probably also like the Mastermind. Although the supporting zombies are missing here, the fast movement abilities and the really cool feeling of being able to throw survivors away provide constant highlights. In its current state, you can’t go wrong with the Mastermind.
