The Onryō
The Onryō comes from the Ringu universe, which many in Europe might know more from the movie “The Ring.” The Onryō is Sadako, also known as the “girl from the well,” who curses people in the franchise and kills them exactly 7 days later. This is also the case in Dead by Daylight, where she can gradually curse survivors and then kill them spontaneously – completely without hanging them on a hook. The Onryō moves at normal movement speed (115%), has a small body structure, and a terror radius of 24 meters.
We also conducted an interview with the developers about Onryō.
Special Ability: Flood of Fear – The Flood of Fear is another ability that is divided into several effects. The Onryō can become invisible while she is in the “Demanifestation” state. Survivors further than 24 meters from her cannot see her. Survivors within 24 meters can only see her flicker briefly. The Onryō can manifest at will. Then she gains a terror radius and can attack. For several seconds after manifesting, she retains her flickering appearance before becoming permanently visible – until she demanifests again.
The second part of her ability is “Projection” and allows her to teleport to turned-on televisions. When this happens, the Onryō automatically manifests. Survivors in direct proximity to this television become partially cursed (“Cursed”). The curse develops more strongly the more survivors experience this projection from the television.
Fully cursed survivors are indicated with a “Killer Instinct” and can be directly killed by the Onryō when they go down.
Survivors can reduce the progress of their curse by turning off TVs, removing the video cassette, and bringing video cassettes to other TVs.
How to use Flood of Fear correctly? The proper use of the Onryō’s abilities is quite complex. You need to make important decisions every second. Generally, when you’re not being chased, you should always be in the demanifested state. This makes it difficult for survivors to locate you. A “Hit & Run” tactic is advisable, where you briefly manifest, strike, and then demanifest again. This way, you benefit from the bonus that your killer is hard to pinpoint.
Projections to the TV can reward in different ways. You can use them to quickly traverse the entire map or to cut off the escape routes of fleeing survivors. Since the terror radius jumps back and forth, this can confuse many survivors and enable you to land easy hits.
Important: Do not desperately try to fully curse survivors and kill them. This will only succeed in a few cases. The curse is more of a mechanic designed to slow down and distract survivors, punishing them if they do not attend to it. It is much more efficient to play the Onryō like a standard killer, hanging survivors and slowly killing them.
Who is the Onryō suitable for? The Onryō is especially suitable for fans of the franchise. Anyone who is into Japanese horror can hardly overlook Sadako. However, one should prepare for a long learning phase, as Sadako has to manage multiple things at once. She not only jumps from TV to TV but also switches between manifestation and demanifestation while simultaneously hindering survivors from repairing – and occasionally attacks. However, mastering her provides an extremely versatile killer with unique mechanics.
