The Oni

The Oni is an original killer created by the developers and is based on many samurai legends. In Dead by Daylight, he is the ancestor of the Yamaoka family. This family also gives rise to the Spirit. The Oni must collect the blood of his victims in order to enter a blood frenzy that makes him extremely deadly.

The values of the Oni are average, but he is very massive and can be quickly recognized from a distance.

Special Ability: Yamaoka’s Wrath – The Oni feasts on the blood of survivors. When he injures survivors, his ability charges up. Injured survivors additionally leave behind blood orbs every few seconds and when performing actions, which the Oni can collect to further charge his ability. Once the ability is fully charged, the Oni can activate “Blood Rage”.

When Blood Rage is activated, the Oni switches his weapon and instead of his sword, wields a massive mace. Blood Rage only remains active for a limited time and must be recharged again – by collecting blood. He can also use two new abilities:

  • With the “Demon Sprint”, the Oni enters a fast run. He is then harder to control (similar to the Hillbilly with his chainsaw), but can still perform sidesteps to better control his path. Additionally, he is not automatically stunned when running into walls.

  • The “Demon Strike” is the new attack of the Oni. It can be used both during the Demon Sprint and separately from it. The strike is briefly charged and has a high melee range. Survivors hit by the strike immediately go down (“dying”) while pallets hit are instantly destroyed.

How to use Yamaoka’s Wrath correctly? The art of mastering the Oni lies in timing the Blood Fury correctly and making the best of the limited time window. The best moments are when you either see multiple survivors at once or want to patrol the map quickly.

When using Demon Sprint, it is important to always be aware that you can sidestep. This saves a lot of time and allows you to dodge obstacles like trees or walls to cut off survivors. It is also helpful that you can use the Demon Strike out of the sprint and make a strong turn – you just need to jerk the mouse (or the controller stick) in the appropriate direction at the last moment.

Lastly, it is important to know that Blood Fury ends immediately once you pick up a survivor. It can only be activated again once the energy bar is refilled with blood. Therefore, it may be worthwhile to down multiple survivors before picking them up.

Pro
  • Extremely high kill potential through “one-hit” ability
  • Additional tracking ability through blood orbs
  • Very strong even without addons
Contra
  • Is a killer without abilities until blood is acquired
  • Very large and extremely noticeable during Blood Fury due to red glow
  • At a disadvantage on winding maps

Who is the Oni suitable for? The Oni is the perfect killer for anyone who just can’t get along with the Trapper but isn’t happy with the Wraith either. The Oni combines the best of both worlds: high movement speed and recurring lethality. Of course, the Oni is also suitable for anyone who just wants to play a samurai – even if he executes his victims rather brutally.
