The Nightmare / Nightmare
The Nightmare is better known to most as Freddy Krueger from the “A Nightmare on Elm Street” film series. In Dead by Daylight, the Nightmare forces his victims into a dream world and slows them down there. Compared to other killers, the Nightmare has average speed, slightly smaller size, and a smaller terror radius.
Note: The Nightmare was drastically reworked in the summer of 2019.
Special Ability: Dream Demon – The Nightmare makes survivors sleepy just by its presence. As soon as the match begins, a timer starts, at the end of which the survivor will be asleep. Once the survivor is asleep, they enter the Nightmare’s dream world and can be affected by additional abilities.
At the same time, “sleeping” causes further negative effects for survivors. As such, asleep survivors can no longer hear the killer’s “terror radius” (heartbeat) and only perceive a faint singing, which cannot be used to determine the direction and distance of the killer.
Additionally, the Nightmare has two more abilities:
- Dream Snare: The Nightmare places a blood trap on the ground. Asleep survivors who pass through it are briefly slowed and scream loudly.
- Dream Projection: The Nightmare can teleport to all not fully repaired generators on the map by targeting them and channeling the ability. While channeling, the corresponding generator explodes in blood, warning survivors of the Nightmare’s appearance.
How to properly use Dream Demon? Using Dream Demon is relatively simple, as it occurs passively. Survivors are put to sleep just by being in the game and cannot prevent this. However, they can wake up in several ways. Once they are awake, they start to slide back into sleep again after a few seconds.

Survivors can be woken in several ways, after which you need to put them back to sleep for them to be affected by Dream Snare. The following actions wake survivors up:
- Woken up by another (awake) survivor
- Missing a skill check while healing, repairing, or sabotaging
- Being hung on hooks
- Healed from “dying” (lying on the ground) to “injured”
As long as survivors are not sleeping, they cannot see the Nightmare from a great distance. When it comes closer, it sometimes “flickers” and disappears from sight again. Only up close can survivors outside of sleep see the Nightmare permanently.
Who is the Nightmare suitable for? The Nightmare is mainly suitable for fans of “A Nightmare on Elm Street”. Otherwise, Freddy must be played very strategically, and he shares strong parallels with the Trapper but has better movement. Only those who enjoy playing ahead will be happy with the Nightmare.
