In 2024, Netflix released a live-action adaptation of a legendary animated series that is still loved by many fans. After 2 years, it finally continues.
Which series is it about? In 2024, Netflix released a live-action version of the popular animated series Avatar – The Last Airbender. Following the film The Last Airbender (2010) by M. Night Shyamalan, this is the second adaptation featuring real actors.
In the world of the series, there are the four elements (fire, water, earth, air). Based on this, there are benders of these elements who live in different nations. The main character Aang (Gordon Cormier) is the reincarnation of the Avatar, the savior of the world, who is the only person able to use all four elements.
Just before the Fire Nation could start its great war, he vanished. In Season 1, he is found by Katara (Kiawentiio) and Sokka (Ian Ousley) from the Water Tribe in the ice, and the three embark on a journey to save the world from the Fire Nation and its Lord Ozai (Daniel Dae Kim).
There is no war in Ba Sing Se
What is the second season about? As the trailer already shows, Season 2 will follow the second season of the source material. The heroes venture into the Earth Kingdom, into the city of Ba Sing Se. The Fire Nation is on the verge of invading, but the city seems to cleverly ignore this.
Aang seeks out Toph in this season to teach him earthbending. According to the actor portraying Aang, this form of bending allows for a new style of martial arts: This is actually quite a nice change. It’s more powerful, energetic, and dynamic than fluid and airy

On the other hand, the story of Zuko (Dallas Liu) continues, who, although he is banished, still tries to capture Aang. His sister Azula (Elizabeth Yu) will also play a larger role in this season.
How was the first season received? Unlike M. Night Shyamalan’s film adaptation, the Netflix series is not a disaster for fans and critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, the first season received a critic score of 62% from 86 reviews. The audience (over 2500 ratings) was somewhat kinder with 70%. The IMDb score is also not bad: with over 84,800 reviews, the series currently sits at 7.2/10.
Thus, despite some criticisms, the series has definitely gathered its fans. Upon release, it claimed the number 1 spot on Netflix and reached 21.2 million views within 5 days (via Variety).
