After finally having some YouTubers get their hands on the new PlayStation 5, there is currently speculation about a mysterious screw on the PS5 that attentive fans discovered in new image material. What function does it have?
Where do the infos come from? Many have been waiting for this: Last weekend, as part of the YouTube Gaming Week Japan, selected YouTubers were finally allowed to extensively test the PS5 and post corresponding videos on their channels.
Since Sunday, there have already been the first hands-on experience reports as well as new images and video material related to Sony’s next-gen console – including fresh gameplay. Some pressing questions have at least been roughly answered – for example, regarding the volume of the PlayStation 5 or the loading times of its SSD.
Some attentive users have come across a mysterious screw in a PS5 review on the Japanese gaming site 4Gamer.net that is now causing a stir.
This is the screw in question: When looking at the PS5 from the front, depending on the angle, the mentioned screw or nut can be seen in one of the ventilation slots of the new Sony console.
This screw is apparently screwed into the black main casing in the middle of the next-gen PlayStation.
What function does this screw have on the PS5? So far, there has been no official explanation from Sony about this. However, the most common theory is that you need to loosen this screw to access the white side cover of the console and thus gain access to the insides of the PlayStation 5.
It is speculated that it serves as access to the SSD of the PS5 or an alternative slot for an additional SSD, possibly to expand the storage capacity of the PS5. Because no other option for swapping the SSD or potentially installing a new or additional one has been visible so far.
Please note that this is still pure speculation, which Sony hopefully will clarify officially soon.
Speaking of storage: If this leak is true, then the PS5 only has 664 GB of free storage.
This is also up for discussion regarding the PS5: Even though now, after the first hands-on reports, some new details about the PS5 are known, some mysteries around Sony’s next-gen console still remain.
For instance, apart from a small leak, it is still not clear exactly what the user interface, i.e., the menu of the PS5, looks like. During the first tests, it was not visible at all, and reports suggest that the system menus were not allowed to be opened. As for the leak itself, there are debates about its authenticity, emphasizing that it could be a recording from the dev kit that is not representative of the final product.
People are still puzzling over what exactly the new Create button on the DualSense controller of the PS5 can do. Sony has also kept this feature a big secret and blocked it for the first hands-on – for whatever reason.
When will the PS5 be released at all? The PlayStation 5 will officially be available in Germany and the rest of Europe from November 19, 2020, and will cost either €499.99 (with disc drive) or €399.99 (digital only), depending on the version.
However, after two waves of pre-orders, the PS5 is currently completely sold out. Some are still hoping for a possible third wave, but when exactly or whether it will even happen before release is currently unknown.
What do you think? What function does this screw fulfill? Is it related to the SSD of the PS5 or could it be for something completely different?
