As Riot Games announced in a blog post, 530 employees have to be laid off. This affects several projects of the company. But what about the 2nd season of Arcane on Netflix?
Riot Games announced that 530 employees would need to be laid off. The reason for this is insufficient profits from smaller projects.
Because: The company had hired many new employees since 2019 to realize the projects. However, they did not generate the profits as planned.
This resulted in excessively high costs that are no longer sustainable. The consequence is now numerous layoffs, which are also impacting planned projects.
Here you can already see a first glimpse of the upcoming season of Arcane:
Under the title “Changes at Riot and the Future Path Ahead,” Dylan Jadeja (CEO of Riot) and Marc Merril (President of Riot) provided more details about the layoffs and the affected projects in a blog post dated January 22, 2024.
They also addressed the 2nd season Arcane. Fans of the series can be reassured, as stated in the blog post: Arcane Season 2 is still planned for November 2024.
This means that the layoffs do not affect the release date of the Netflix series, and we can still expect the release in the winter of this year.
The blog post also emphasizes that entertainment should be even more closely linked to gaming alongside esports and music.
Regarding entertainment, it states: “Entertainment is not just about storytelling; it is a gateway to the deeper stories, characters, and worlds that enrich the gaming experience. […] Our focus is on quality, impact, and cohesive experiences for players around the world.”
This suggests that projects like Arcane continue to hold high priority in the company’s strategy.
