Sony discusses its future plans for the PlayStation. With its next-gen console PS5, it aims to continue focusing on core gamers and is committed to exclusive AAA titles.
This has always been important to Sony: Sony has always placed great importance on addressing “core gamers,” meaning truly passionate players and fans, with its consoles.
They achieved this not only through excellent third-party support from indie developers as well as renowned AAA publishers, but also with an impressive lineup of in-house PlayStation exclusive titles. This is what set Sony consoles apart for many.
This strategy has proven successful for Sony over the years, and it seems that with the next-gen PlayStation, the PS5, they will pursue the same idea.
This is Sony’s strategy for the future with PS5
Where does the information come from? Sony discussed its plans at a recent corporate strategy meeting. The US website The Wall Street Journal reported on it exclusively.
What does Sony plan with the PS5? At this meeting, they understandably also spoke about the PS5. The upcoming console was referred to as a niche product by Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida, aimed specifically at the core gamer audience.
For this, they intend to secure deals with major third-party publishers as they did previously. AAA titles with large budgets will clearly take precedence over indie developments, including games like Fallout or Red Dead Redemption.
And even though indie games will continue to receive support, Sony believes that the targeted audience is turning to Sony consoles to play really big and exclusive titles and to experience high-quality gaming.
To supply this audience with the appropriate games, they will also strive to strengthen and expand the exclusive AAA lineup for Sony in the future. In-house studios such as Guerilla Games or Naughty Dog could benefit from this.
Why is this good for gamers? Quite simply. Sony will evidently increasingly focus in the future on securing as many major titles and exclusive deals (such as DLCs) for its consoles – including the PS5. There should also be more exclusive titles, which are an important argument for many when purchasing Sony consoles.
In short: In the future, PlayStation will offer more of everything that demanding fans and gamers want. This is the area where Sony intends to intensify its efforts.
Also interesting: According to The Wall Street Journal, not all top executives at Sony are thrilled with Yoshida’s visions. Some have reportedly criticized his strategy for the future of the PlayStation 5 – albeit only internally. Some executives are said to fear that smaller studios and developers could be driven to the competition by this attitude.
