Not all characters from the comics make it into the Amazon series of The Boys. To tell a different story, some elements have to be left out. This includes an important member of the Seven, who was replaced in Season 1.
Which member is it? The Seven are like the Justice League or the Avengers. They are the most well-known and important superhero team in the world of The Boys. Although their character differs between the series and the comics, the series stays quite accurate to the members:
- Homelander
- Queen Maeve
- The Deep
- A-Train
- Black Noir
- Starlight
Only one member is a complete invention in Season 1: Translucent. The first mission
of Hughie with Butcher doesn’t exist in the comics. He replaces the character Jack from Jupiter. When you look at him closely, you can also see why.
Even next to The Deep a loser
Who is Jack from Jupiter? Like all members of the Seven in the comics by Garth Ennis, Jack from Jupiter was created from the DNA of Stormfront, who is very different in the comics. He is a super with orange skin (fitting for Jupiter), who only wears a cape, shoes, and underwear. He also has no hair on his body.
Jack from Jupiter is a parody of the Martian Manhunter from the DC universe, and Vought also markets him as an alien from another world. However, this makes him not as marketable
as other members of the Seven, which is why he often complains. Additionally, he regularly expresses racist or homophobic views.
As a super, he can fly and has somewhat more strength than normal humans, but not as much as Homelander, comic-Butcher, or characters like The Deep. His unique feature is a kind of force field. When he says Carpo
, he is surrounded by a red light that makes him invulnerable. This is an element of the DC character Shazam, who transforms whenever he says Shazam
.
Aside from that, Jack From Jupiter is quite a joke. Without his force field, even someone like The Deep can easily slap him away, and even Butcher was strong enough to kill him after thinking Jack had killed his dog (like with most atrocities, it was actually Black Noir).
Here you see a comparison between Jack from Jupiter and the Martian Manhunter:

Not down-to-earth enough for the series
Is Jack from Jupiter in the Amazon series? In the series, his place in Season 1 is taken by the new character Translucent. He actually has nothing in common with Jack from Jupiter, except that his skin is impervious. Otherwise, he is a super who can turn invisible, but only his skin, which is why he has to be naked to remain unseen. Translucent is the first super that Hughie deals with Butcher.
In fact, there is a character in the series who looks quite similar to Jack from Jupiter
. In Season 2, Hughie and Lamplighter watch porn, and one features a bald character with a red cape (Source: Moviepilot).
Otherwise, you can also see Jack from Jupiter in the animated series The Boys: Diabolical, which is not canonical within the TV series except for Episode 8, so it only takes place in an alternative universe.
Why was Jack from Jupiter replaced? On this topic, Eric Kripke, the showrunner of the series, commented in a Reddit AMA from 2019. When asked why Jack from Jupiter was replaced, Kripke replied:
We are trying to make the series as realistic as possible – and the public is told that people were suddenly and spontaneously born with these powers. (This is of course not the truth, but Vought sells the public a kind of mutant mythology.) To say that one of their heroes is an alien would destroy this myth. Jack always seemed too fantastic to us for the world we wanted to create.
His potential marketability would be the issue in the series. While Homelander and Co. are seen as better people
in the public eye, an alien wouldn’t fit into this narrative. That’s why there are also no gods like Thor in the series.
The Boys deviates quite a lot from the comics, which probably does the series quite well. Many aspects have improved in the Amazon series. But above all, one villain from the comics impressed MeinMMO editor Nikolas Hernes: The best villain from The Boys is missing in the Amazon series, he even surpasses Homelander
