Baldur’s Gate 3 is full of secrets, and probably no player has seen them all. Many contents can be easily overlooked or missed because you don’t make the right choices. One of these choices hides the perfect weapon for Wyll.
Spoiler Warning: This is about content from Act 2 of Baldur’s Gate 3.
What kind of sword is this?
- The Infernal Rapier is a +2 rapier that increases your spell DC and scales with your spell modifier instead of strength or dexterity, as finesse weapons usually do.
- As a special ability, the Infernal Rapier can also summon a Cambion. These devils are somewhat mediocre in strength, but are quite useful as a free companion and “damage sponge.”
- Most players will probably miss the Infernal Rapier because you have to meet specific requirements and master a tough boss fight.
Here’s how you get the Infernal Rapier: The weapon is a reward for a section of Wyll’s personal quest. Wyll is one of the companions in Baldur’s Gate 3, and you can only take him with you if you’re playing co-op with at most 3 players.
In Act 2, Mizora, Wyll’s patron, intercepts you and instructs you to search for something “important” beneath the Towers of Morning – specifically, in the Mindflayer colony. Very late in Act 2, you will get there and find a capsule.
Inside this capsule is Mizora herself, whom you are to free. If you do this, you then need to succeed in a persuasion roll with difficulty 14 to get the Infernal Rapier.
However, at this point, you cannot return to camp. Therefore, you must bring Wyll to the boss fight against Ketheric Thorm, the final boss of Act 2. This battle is considered one of the hardest in the game.
Wyll is generally not seen as the most popular companion, which is why many players do not want him in the fight against Thorm. If you don’t want to bring a Warlock along, you can simply respec Wyll ahead of time – this way you won’t make the fight unnecessarily harder.
The Rapier is ideal for the new Warlock subclass
The Infernal Rapier is completely designed for spellcasters, as it operates with the corresponding modifier. The weapon is thus suitable as a weapon for Warlocks or Sorcerers.
With Patch 8, the Hexblade has been added as a new subclass, which is even more specialized in melee combat than others. However, Bards are particularly likely to benefit, as they can already rely on melee with the right school.
On Steam, a user notes that the rapier is not that strong since there are weapons at the same level that have an additional die of damage. However, others respond that you can simply use another weapon as your pact weapon if you have made the pact of the blade as a Warlock, and wield the rapier in your off-hand.
Much earlier and with less effort, you can already get a sword in the tutorial that will probably accompany you until the middle of Act 2 or even longer. You basically just need to steal it: The best weapon for level 1 can be found right at the start if you’re smart – or cowardly
