Warlocks are having a hard time in the Season of Discoveries from WoW Classic. They are insulted. The reason is simply one thing: silly.
World of Warcraft Classic currently excites many fans with the “Season of Discoveries.” There are many innovations such as “Level-Up Raids”, new abilities for all classes, and a slowly increasing level cap. However, not everything is nice and pleasant. Some players have an extreme expectation of their warlock colleagues – and they insult them mercilessly when they don’t immediately respond to their requests.
In his Reddit post “Loot from 45 minutes of semi-absent in Undercity”, the warlock Commander_Corndog shows what kind of messages he receives – and what kind of expectations complete strangers apparently have of him.
What is it about? The whisper messages are about characters wishing to be summoned by the warlock. This is a special ability of the warlock that greatly facilitates travel – provided the warlock has enough supporters.
Especially the expectation of the whisperers seems to meet a lot of misunderstanding. Not only must the warlock have soul shards in stock, he also has to actively seek two other players to carry out the teleportation. For a measly tip of a few silver and often paired with unfriendly comments, very few seem to take it on.
After the warlock declines or simply does not respond – because he was perhaps afk – insults immediately followed.
What kind of comments are those? Some of the comments have been shown by Commander_Corndog with hidden names. Here are some excerpts from the dialogues:
“Can you teleport me to Undercity? Tip 50 silver.”
“I don’t have shards on me, sorry.”
“Lol useless warlock, enjoy your game, idiot.”
Another one chimed in while the warlock was afk:
UNDERCITY SUMMONING??
HELLO?
[Racist insult]
These are still the harmless examples. In other whisper messages, there are racist comments. One even searches for the name of the warlock and believes he has found his Reddit profile to leave transphobic comments – even though that was not the correct person:
In summary, this is a lot of hostility for a stranger, other player not doing what one would like.
This is what the community says: In the subreddit, many are quite shocked about the harshness and wording of some players. Especially the openly racist or transphobic comments are severely condemned. Most are sure that this is a direct reason for a “perma-ban” and hope that the punishment comes quickly.
Others are amused by the expectations of people and find them lofty:
- “Lmao, don’t people know that you still need clickers?” – nojumbad
- “Even if people offered me 2-3 gold, I would turn them down. Why should I spend time looking for 2 clickers, paying them for their help, and then hoping that the buyer actually pays? Just so some lazy guy saves 5 minutes of travel time.” – axcli
- “I know people just say everything on the internet because they fear no consequences… but this is seriously just sad and concerning.” – Xander3Zero
- “As a mage, I’ve had people wanting me to cancel my flight path, land, walk to them, and bring them water.” – IntuneHatesMe
Is it like this everywhere in Classic? No, many comments confirm this as well. Some say that it is much more relaxed on certain realms. Moreover, many assume that this is a temporary state currently affecting mainly warlocks. Because in the “Season of Discoveries”, warlocks are currently the only ones who can offer other characters a quick travel option. Mages learn their portals only later – when the level cap increases with an upcoming patch.
That there is chaos in the Season of Discoveries is shown by the case of an angry dragon that wipes out Thunder Bluff.
