Several researchers are apparently big fans of One Piece. They have discovered a new spider and named it after a character from the anime.
What kind of spider is this? In a forest in western Thailand, researchers were looking for holes in the ground, as they suspected an undiscovered species of spider there. Previously, PhD student Chawakorn Kunsete had noticed a photo on Facebook.
The photo showed a spider that appeared to be divided lengthwise in the middle. One half is reddish-brown, the other is black and white. There was also a separate sex, as the left half of the body displayed female, while the right exhibited male characteristics.
Since the researcher could not assign the spider to any known species, he contacted the photographer to ask where he had come across the specimen. And indeed, this species was unknown to science until now.
Therefore, the researchers decided to name the spider themselves. As they are big fans of the One Piece anime, the spider was named after a specific character who shares a trait with the spider.
Discovered spider named after a character from One Piece
After which character was it named? The spider is now called Damarchus inazuma. Inazuma is a character from One Piece who, like the spider, is visually divided into 2 halves and is also both male and female.
In their study, the researchers write:
The species is named after Inazuma, a character from the Japanese manga “One Piece,” who is known for being able to switch between male and female. The Inazuma type is characterized by bilateral asymmetry and has distinct coloration, with the left side being orange and the right side white.

While Inazuma from One Piece does not possess both genders simultaneously, he can switch between a male and female form at any time.
His dual gender is possible thanks to his boss Emporio Ivankov. He can change the gender of others by injecting them with hormones through his Devil Fruit.
