After Sunset is the first game from the new developer Playstark. The game stands out with graphics reminiscent of Fortnite. However, this upcoming roguelite PvE shooter plays very similarly to a co-op hit on Steam, Risk of Rain 2. MeinMMO tells you more.
What is After Sunset? On Steam, the developers describe After Sunset as a rogue-lite shooter with a special mechanic where light and darkness play a significant role.
The colorful and cute monsters you fight are called Murkors. At the beginning of a level, these clumsy creatures awkwardly run around with swim rings on their heads. As the sun slowly sets in the level, these funny monsters gradually transform into dangerous foes.
You can see how the game looks in motion in the trailer:
Gameplay in After Sunset strongly resembles Risk of Rain 2
This third-person shooter may initially look just like Fortnite, but apart from the camera perspective and the appearance of some items, there are not many overlaps. Instead, After Sunset’s gameplay strongly resembles another rogue-lite shooter: Risk of Rain 2.
How does “After Sunset” play? As in Risk of Rain 2, you select a character at the beginning of a run in the rogue-lite, each with its own weapons and abilities. You then play through several pre-made levels with randomly generated enemies and items.
Risk of Rain 2 was also a hit on Steam thanks to its co-op mode – this mode is expected to be added to “After Sunset” shortly after the early access launch.
Killed monsters and certain containers in “After Sunset” leave behind light, which you can use to receive random items from chests. The twist is that your strongest attacks (like a light grenade) also consume this light. So you must constantly decide between short-term powerful attacks and potentially long-term upgrades.
If you want to think long-term, the game also features a well-known mechanic: In a level, you can collect slime that you can store in machines. With this, you can buy upgrades in the main menu that permanently enhance your abilities. You can also unlock new items and weapons this way.
When can I play the game? After Sunset aims to enter early access soon, but there is no exact date yet. A demo of the game, called After Sunset: First Dawn, is already playable. This way, you can get an impression of how the gameplay feels in the beach level of the shooter.
How much does the game cost? The price of the PvE shooter is currently unknown. However, it is likely that the game will not be a free-to-play title, like comparable games.
