As a big fan of the legendary giant lizard, MeinMMO editor Nikolas Hernes had to check out the new demo of Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee Remastered and really enjoyed it, even though he wouldn’t recommend it to everyone.
During the current Steam Next Fest, I was very pleased to find the demo for Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee Remastered among all the AI stuff. As the long title reveals, it’s a remaster. In the game, you fight in various modes with 12 giant monsters from the Godzilla franchise.
In the demo, you can choose from 3 monsters, including Godzilla, Gigan, and King Ghidorah, and face off against bots or online against human opponents in a city map. There’s also a look at the destruction mode and a training option.
As I’m currently waiting for the release of Godzilla Minus Zero, the demo comes at the perfect time and to be brief: It’s exactly what I expected, but it also has some quirks.
Fights like in the old days
The fighting itself is relatively simple, but it is certainly fun. At first, I had to get used to the combos, as they are quite slow and you can’t connect every move well together, since the opponent simply strikes back in between. Luckily, the demo already features a training mode to experiment.
You shouldn’t expect a complex fighting game here. It is quite clunky and sometimes wooden, which you have to get used to. But I adjusted quickly, especially because I found many online matches in the evenings without having to search long.
I had a lot of fun overall, especially with the lasers and buildings you can throw. It just feels like an old wrestling game, only with Godzilla and co. That’s why it’s also not particularly balanced
. Especially Gigan with his damn teleportation drove me to frustration, and I’m already cursing all my friends who will fight with him.
Meanwhile, the demo took me back to my childhood, which I like to call the best time of gaming
. On the PS2 or GameCube, many games were clunky, but with titles like Shrek Super Slam or Power Stone, I could spend whole evenings with friends because those games broke down the un-perfect
gameplay. You laughed because not everything worked and looked good.
For me, the local couch co-op is the most important feature, especially when you can create a gigantic chaos against each other with four players. That’s why I already know that I will definitely buy the game on November 6th, but probably rather on console due to convenience.
Despite my great joy, I can’t recommend the game to everyone.

The presentation is not optimal
Despite the fun of the game, there were a few points that disappointed me. On one hand, the game isn’t particularly pretty, even though it’s a remaster. I like this GameCube look, but it will be difficult to attract new players with it. The menu also feels too sterile and could have used a bit more love.
Moreover, the gameplay is a double-edged sword. I have a great passion for action titles that don’t always feel perfect. As a modern player, you have to change your mindset significantly because the movement isn’t snappy
and fast, as you are used to these days – at the same time, it fits the large monsters.
Another negative point is the health indicator. It felt a bit too big for my taste, which made the battles feel prolonged.
You have to be clear that it feels like an old game, which is why I would only recommend the game to Godzilla fans or lovers of the GameCube/PS2 era. Admittedly, the game will only cost 30 € digitally according to the eShop.
Does the game sound interesting to you, or is it rather too outdated? Feel free to let us know in the comments! If you’re still unsure, you can check out the demo on Steam until October 27. For Godzilla fans, the new game is definitely another opportunity to play as the giant lizard. But if you want to play a modern interpretation of the genre, I can only recommend GigaBash: In a game on Steam, I beat my friends with Godzilla
