After Orbital Lightning Sorceresses were considered the best build in Season 2 of Diablo 4 for a long time, there is now a new build that apparently takes the lead: HotA Barbarians. The build revolves around war cries and the Hammer of the Ancients, which has unexpectedly taken the lead.
What is this build?
- HotA stands for “Hammer of the Ancients”. The skill is the core of the build; you essentially build upon making it as powerful as possible.
- In the tier list of best builds for Season 2, HotA Barbarians are at the top of the top tier, although they weren’t that strong at the beginning of the season.
- The expert site maxroll.gg maintains its own leaderboard for Zir’s Abattoir, currently the biggest challenge in Diablo 4 (via maxroll). Until there are official leaderboards in Season 3, this list serves as a reference point for many fans.
What makes HotA Barbarians so strong? The Hammer of the Ancients actually hits only a few enemies, but thanks to the Aspect of Ancestor Power, it has a significantly larger area of effect. You can effectively hit large groups of enemies with it.
The entire build then focuses on strengthening the ability: You use Berserker to deal more damage and multiply this damage as much as possible. Important here are especially your screams and the ultimate ability “Wrath of the Berserker”, which serve as additional multipliers. You can find the HotA build for Barbarians in detail here.
In the end, several million damage for the hammer appears on the screen. The build is so strong that the first players have mastered the supposedly unbeatable abattoir with it.

The fact that HotA Barbarians are so strong bothers almost no one in the community. On Reddit, there are ongoing discussions about it, a recent discussion started in the Reddit forum.
In the comments, it states that it is perfectly fine if a build is too strong for a season. In the next season, it will just be another.
Before the HotA Barbarian in Season 2, the Orbital Lightning Sorceress held this rank. The build can kill Uber Lilith in just about 2 seconds. Players say: This is exactly why one plays Diablo.
The developers actually see it similarly. After they significantly nerfed in Season 1, there were even refusals to tone down too strong builds in Season 2 – much to the delight of the community.
Especially casuals, who keep Diablo alive, enjoy being able to easily melt enemies. This applies not only to the best builds but generally to the classes and play styles. According to unanimous opinion from the community, Season 2 got a lot right here: Players celebrate how OP they are and want it to stay that way.
