The slasher genre used to be the biggest horror genre, but it has become smaller and smaller. In recent years, however, interesting representatives keep popping up. One of them is Thanksgiving, which you can currently watch on Netflix. MyMMO editor Nikolas Hernes can recommend it.
What is Thanksgiving about? In the town of Plymouth, a terrible tragedy occurred during Black Friday at a store, where many people were injured or even killed. A year later, a masked murderer terrorizes the town and seems to be seeking revenge on those responsible.
Thanksgiving is a classic slasher horror film, similar to Scream or Halloween. A masked murderer, a small town, and unsympathetic high schoolers. That sounds quite familiar, and it is, but the film still manages to be entertaining.

What makes Thanksgiving so entertaining? The film doesn’t take itself seriously. The group of teenagers and the other victims of the killer are not particularly likable. This reminded me of films like Friday the 13th or Halloween, where at most two characters are not unbearable.
But that’s exactly right to balance out the brutal scenes. Director Eli Roth brings experience from Hostel and stages quite creative scenes suitable for Thanksgiving. It also gets bloody, so anyone with a weak stomach should think twice before watching the film.
However, if you enjoy the absurd and from the viewer’s perspective illogical
, you will have fun here. I felt particularly reminded of Friday the 13th in this respect. Even with this film, it is never particularly scary, but rather brutal and at times funny.
Thanksgiving has been streaming on Netflix for a few days now. If you miss the 80s and 90s with their many slasher films, Thanksgiving might be worth it. Especially since the film is a pleasant short watch at under 2 hours. You can find other brutal horror recommendations here: 5 horror films rated 18 that are not for the faint of heart
