In CoD: Warzone there are many ways to achieve a good placement. Some of them are quite bizarre – and surely frustrating for many players. MeinMMO author Benedict Grothaus experienced such a bizarre round.
This is how the round went: When the solo mode finally released on March 17, I immediately watched some rounds. In my last round of the day, I noticed a helicopter early on, one of the vehicles in Warzone.
The heli flew high into the air shortly after the start of the round somewhere at the edge of the zone and then stayed still in a hover at that position. I ignored it and continued, eventually it faded from my memory.
Towards the end of the round, as the circle got smaller, I rediscovered the heli – still simply hovering in the air, high up and ignored by most players. I tried multiple times to hit it with a sniper rifle, but unsuccessfully.
That only drew the attention of other players to me – and ultimately I probably died because I came out of my protected position.
That was the victory: When I finally bit the dust just before the end, I continued to watch – until the end. The player in the heli came in second because no one paid attention to him. He only lost because the first place managed to stay alive with self-revivals and stims.
When he died at the end, he left almost no loot behind – he hardly collected anything during the whole round, but just hid in his heli.
Annoying Strategy or Clever Tactic?
Here’s why that’s a problem: Aside from the fact that such a passive and pacifistic way of playing probably doesn’t suit everyone, two problems emerged that make things a bit unfair.
On one hand, the eventual winner could hardly hit the opponent at some point. The game does not allow looking straight up, and eventually the circle was too small for him to hit the heli directly above him. To me, that appeared cowardly.
On the other hand, the heli player could stay in the air indefinitely. Until now, there hasn’t been any criticism in the community, but if such rounds appear more often, calls for a fuel system might arise.
That’s why it’s still clever: The strategy certainly requires little effort. You find a heli (in some of our best landing spots for Warzone, there’s always one hanging around), get in, and wait.
Then you just have to fly high enough and out of sight so that you are irrelevant to most players or they don’t notice you. Eventually, they’ll run out of time and seek more important targets.
As a reward, you might not get a victory, but at least a hefty chunk of experience points, even without an XP boost.
What can I do against it? As long as you don’t happen to find the right weapons, you can do little against it. However, you can already prepare in case such a player annoys you someday:
- Create a loadout with the PILA launcher as a secondary weapon – You can find the best loadouts for Warzone here
- Get a supply drop at the supply stations – Those are one of the best items to buy
- Take the PILA loadout and take out the heli
- If you are a particularly good sniper, you can also resort to the strongest sniper rifle for Warzone, the AX-50, and try to blast the pilot out of the cockpit
Alternatively, there’s another strategy to take down helis from the air – but that requires a recon drone.
