Fallout 76 actually offers no NPCs that players can interact with. This inspired a fan to become an NPC himself. However, he chose one of the most unpopular characters in the series.
Which NPC is he playing in Fallout 76? The YouTuber RpTheHotrod thought about how he could play Fallout 76 differently. His idea: he now embodies the Minutemen officer Preston Garvey from Fallout 4 in Fallout 76.
Fallout 76: Player Becomes NPC
Who is Preston Garvey? Preston Garvey is one of the more well-known characters from Fallout 4. He is an officer of the Commonwealth Minutemen and one of the player’s possible companions.
Garvey is also one of the most unpopular or annoying characters in the series. He is known for coming to the player at the most inconvenient times to assign him a quest where he has to defend a settlement.
Settlements in Fallout 4 are comparable to the workshops or the C.A.M.P.s from Fallout 76, only larger. They are camps populated with NPCs that the player can build and also defend.
This is how RpTheHotrod becomes Garvey: Fallout 76 offers an extensive character creation system with many options for customizing one’s characters. With the help of this tool, RpTheHotrod created a character that looks like Garvey.
It seems that RpTheHotrod got the clothing from the Atom Shop of Fallout 76, where players can buy cosmetic items with real money. At least his duster looks like one of the purchased items.
RpTheHotrod also uses voice files from Fallout 4, which he records with his microphone in Fallout 76. This allows him to interact with other players using Preston Garvey’s voice.
Players seem to find it funny: As Preston Garvey, RpTheHotrod now roams Appalachia, distributing “quests” to players by sending them to (non-existent) settlements.
A player in power armor even engages with the roleplay. Although he recognizes Garvey and greets him with an “Oh God…”, he asks somewhat resignedly where the settlement that needs help is.
The idea with Preston Garvey actually came months before the release of Fallout 76. A fan suggested on Reddit to create multiple Garveys and mark other players on the map who “need help”.
