With a death in the episode, the series not only grows beyond the comics once again, but it also shows that it is not just a simple parody of superheroes.
7 years later, A-Train tries to make amends for his biggest mistake
Which character is it about? Even in Season 4, A-Train showed that he is not just a ruthless supe on Homelander’s side. While saving MM, he realized how good it feels to finally be a real hero. And in Season 5, he lives in exile, hiding himself and his family from Homelander’s minions.
He is asked by Starlight to help rescue Hughie, Frenchie, and MM from a prison camp. At first, he refuses. When conflict arises later in the episode, and Hughie and MM are about to be killed, A-Train appears and saves them both. Afterwards, he flees again, with Homelander hunting him.
While fleeing, a woman suddenly stands in the street, and A-Train swerves. He crashes into the woods and is captured by Homelander. Instead of submitting to Homelander’s power, A-Train laughs at him and insults him: What was I so afraid of? You are a worthless nothing. […] A shitty costume with nothing underneath. Without your powers, what are you even? A pathetic, weak, whiny loser.
Even though Homelander acts tough in the scene, A-Train’s words seem to hurt him more than the blows from other opponents. With tears in his eyes, he ultimately kills A-Train, who dies a heroic death after 5 seasons.

What makes his death so impactful? A-Train’s death is not just a simple heroic death because he saved the Boys beforehand. It is about the manner in which he died.
In the 1st episode of The Boys from 2019, he is the initial reason for the start of the story. He kills Hughie’s then-girlfriend while running through the streets, not paying attention to anything in his high. For a long time, he doesn’t care about this, and until Season 4, he behaves like an arrogant supe, fitting perfectly into Homelander’s team.
In Season 5, he dies while fleeing after saving his former enemies and still dodging a woman. A-Train has changed.
There, he finally tells Homelander to his face what he really thinks of him. Despite his death, it is a disempowerment of Homelander, as even his inhuman powers cannot protect him against the insults.
