Anyone who wants to choose a class, subclass, and a whole build in Baldur’s Gate 3 will be faced with numerous options, but everyone can quickly find their favorites. MyMMO author Caro, a hardcore warlock player, wanted to try something new in her co-op run – and surprisingly found a particular fondness for a barbarian build.

What kind of build is it? In this article, I want to introduce you to one of my new favorite builds that makes me grin with every round. I’m talking about the Tiger-Heart Barbarian, who can not only deal significant damage but also leaves opponents paralyzed by their fate – and I mean that literally.

If played correctly, the Tiger-Heart Barbarian can finish off opponents so that they can do absolutely nothing on their turn – absolutely nothing. I never thought I could take such sadistic pleasure in it, but this build has made it possible. And I don’t want to withhold that from you.

What makes the Tiger-Heart Barbarian so strong? Ideally, by the end of the game, you will be able to do the following with this barbarian:

• Attack multiple opponents at once, which results in decent AoE damage.

• Maim your opponents so that they can no longer move (their movement distance is reduced to 0)

• Make your opponents bleed (targets take 2 slashing damage at the start of each round and have a disadvantage on Constitution saving throws)

• Daze your opponents (targets have a disadvantage on Wisdom saving throws, cannot use reactions, and lose the Dexterity bonus to their armor class)

• Knock your opponents prone (targets have no movement rate, no reactions, and disadvantages on Strength and Dexterity saving throws)

All these effects can be applied not only to one opponent, as you can target up to 3 targets directly, who can no longer move after your attack. Even though the build is strongest at level 12, it is also suitable in the early stages of the game and gets stronger over time.

The most important attributes:

The key values of the Tiger-Heart Barbarian are Strength for damage and attack bonus, which becomes even more powerful with the “Great Weapon Master” feat, Dexterity for a high initiative, and Constitution for the barbarian’s HP and armor class.

I recommend placing the +2 bonus on Strength and the +1 bonus on Dexterity. Your starting values should look approximately like this:

• Strength: 17
• Dexterity: 16
• Constitution: 14
• Intelligence: 8
• Wisdom: 10
• Charisma: 8

The most important feats and skills of the level-ups:

Here are the most important aspects of level-ups that are crucial for the build. Levels not mentioned can be customized as you wish:

• Level 3: At the third level, you choose the Tiger Heart along with your rage. This grants you “Tiger’s Bloodlust,” allowing you to attack up to 3 opponents at once during a rage, causing them to bleed. The damage is halved, but this will be compensated by a feat at level 4.

• Level 4: At level 4, you can acquire the “Great Weapon Master” feat. This allows you to make an additional attack as a bonus action when you achieve a critical hit. Additionally, you can deal 10 extra damage with heavy weapons at the expense of a -5 penalty on your attack rolls. This penalty will be offset at level 6, making the extra 10 damage essentially free. Therefore, you should always use heavy weapons with your Tiger-Heart Barbarian!

• Level 6: At level 6, you gain the Aspect of the Tiger, which adds your Strength modifier to your attack rolls. This offsets the -5 penalty from the Great Weapon Master. Additionally, you gain the Survival skill as a bonus.

• Level 10: At level 10, you choose the Aspect of the Glutton. This allows you to maim a bleeding target with an additional attack. Together with Tiger’s Bloodlust, you can maim 3 targets per round, who will no longer be able to move. If you move away from them after your attack and they can’t make ranged attacks, the targets remain powerless. They can do nothing but stand still and ultimately skip their turn as if paralyzed. This is when the build becomes particularly strong.

• Level 11: Here you can multiclass as a Fighter to learn the “Great Weapon Fighting” ability. If you roll a 1 or 2 for your attack, that roll is rerolled.

• Level 12: Here you level up again in Fighter and gain Action Surge, allowing you to make even more attacks with Tiger’s Bloodlust. This means you can maim up to 6 targets, making your crowd control as a barbarian even better.

Paralyze opponents with Reverberation

Through certain items, you can completely incapacitate your opponents. They fall to the ground, become prone, and must use their entire movement to stand up. The trick is that the opponents will have no movement available due to being maimed by Tiger’s Bloodlust. This means:

Your opponents will be immobile on the ground and can do nothing about it. Their turn will simply be skipped. You accomplish this with the condition Reverberation.

I will explain how to achieve this and which items you need:

• With the “Boots of Stormy Clamour,” you can grant an opponent 2 rounds of Reverberation if you apply a condition at the same time. Since you inflict bleeding with Tiger’s Bloodlust, the Reverberation is also added here. You can purchase the boots from Omeluum after completing his quest in Act 2 of the game.

• With the “Gloves of Belligerent Skies,” you can trigger even more rounds of Reverberation on an opponent. When the wearer of the gloves deals damage of the types sonic, lightning, or radiant, they add 2 rounds of Reverberation. You can find the gloves in the Y’llek crib, in the same room where you fight Ch’r’ai W’wargaz.

With just these two items, you can trigger 4 rounds of Reverberation per attack. Once a target has 5 rounds of Reverberation, they fall to the ground and become immobile as described.

• If you want to take this build even further, you can equip the “Ring of Spiteful Thunder.” When the wearer of a reverberating creature takes sonic damage, they become dazed on a failed Constitution saving throw. Since a target suffers sonic damage after 5 rounds of Reverberation, the daze is therefore guaranteed. You can purchase the ring in the Towers of Dawn Roah Moonglow.

Another interesting buff for the Tiger-Heart Barbarian is BOOOAL’s Blessing. This gives you an attack advantage against bleeding targets. Learn here how to obtain BOOOAL’s Blessing.

The Tiger-Heart Barbarian defeats a major boss in just a few moves

I noticed early on that the build is strong, but I found out just how merciless it can be during my Dark Urge run in the battle against Orin.

I played a “good” Dark Urge Tiger-Heart Barbarian (what a grand name), who had to stand her ground in a duel against Orin’s Slayer form. Since it was also an Honor Run, I was quite nervous.

As it turned out, the fight was over in less than a minute. I attacked Orin twice each round with Tiger’s Bloodlust and then moved out of her potential melee range. Since Orin can only attack targets close to her in her Slayer form and was robbed of her high jump range, she was absolutely powerless without her movement radius. She simply skipped her round.

I ended this fight in just a few moves without taking even a single point of damage. Did that make the fight a bit less epic? Yes. But was it worth it? Definitely.

The build has won my heart

Although I usually prefer to play a warlock, whether in Baldur’s Gate 3 or Dungeons & Dragons, the Tiger-Heart Barbarian has truly won my heart. Especially in Honor mode, the build was very reliable and could achieve a lot due to its crowd control and high damage.
