World of Warcraft is full of quests. Anyone starting now can almost impossible catch up on all the older ones. However, there are a few quests and series that are so good that they have remained in the memory of veterans to this day.
Quests are an important component of every MMORPG, providing players not only with experience points and rewards, but also serving two narrative purposes: telling the story of the game and leading players to new areas.
Many tasks in MMORPGs are pure “fetch quests”, meaning: collect 5 wild boar tusks, 3 wolf pelts, or chop wood 12 times. Others have more depth, and WoW even offers with The War Within a quest that only “evil” characters can complete.
On Reddit, hundreds of veterans have gathered and considered which quests from WoW’s history were actually the absolute best for them and that they would recommend to every player.
Not directly a quest, but definitely one of the most memorable moments in WoW: The end of the Lich King from WotLK:
These quests you should definitely play: In the comments of the thread, there are numerous recommendations that are somewhat… questionable. One player says, for example: “If you’re a Tauren, there’s this crazy quest where you have to collect 8 flowers.”
Most users, however, mention quests that actually tell a really strong story, such as:
- The Legend of Stalvan, a quest from Classic about a dramatic love story. We already presented this quest line in 2017 in our 3 epic quests that fell into oblivion.
- The entire starting areas of Death Knights and Goblins. There are such strong stories or completely crazy situations here that they are worth it. As a Goblin, for example, you accidentally set Deathwing free, it seems… oops.
- Drustvar as a whole area, especially if you enjoy witches and the occult. Here, one user states: “Alliance-Drustvar is the best zone in the entire game.”
- The story of the blue dragons from Dragonflight, which is even one of the best quests of all time for MeinMMO demon Cortyn.
- The story of Pamela Redpath, which no longer exists today. You can only play it in WoW Classic.
A personal recommendation is also the quest line of the Uncrowned from the Rogue Order Hall in Legion. This leads later to a highly controversial quest in Dragonflight, but in general, all order halls are really strong.
The undisputed best quest that players recommend, however, involves hidden intrigues, a kidnapped king, and an evil dragon in a charming form.
“From the starting area to the first raid, this is how a quest line should be”
Most recommendations are for the quest line “The Missing Diplomat” – or actually already one of the first quests in the starting area of humans. Because that’s where the story already begins:
- You quickly get to know the Defias as a human, but only as simple bandits and robbers.
- Later in Westfall, you learn that the Defias are actually well organized and apparently have good connections.
- By the time you reach the dungeon, there’s the first explanation that the Defias were once a stonemason guild that built Stormwind.
The story then develops over many hours and areas, but suddenly ends at some point. A few levels later, you then get the quest line to unlock Onyxia’s Lair in Classic.
It is only then that you learn the full extent of the story you touched on as a human back then: Behind the Defias’ betrayal and the war in the Shadows lies the last black dragon lady Onyxia, who lived unnoticed in Stormwind as Lady Katrana Prestor.
You find out that none other than the king of men himself has been kidnapped and that everything was orchestrated by Onyxia. The quest ultimately culminates in you taking 40 players into the lair of the dragon lady and defeating her. According to players, this is “the pinnacle of the leveling experience.”
Later, the quest is even continued, albeit briefly and only for humans: When you pick up your traditional armor, the Defias are picked up one last time. Many quests and situations from World of Warcraft have remained in players’ memories; however, not all of them are positive. Especially with quests, there are certainly a few things that one would probably prefer never to have experienced: WoW: Here are the 5 most annoying quests of all time
