If you want to collect a few cool templates in World of Warcraft as a Caller, you might be in for a nasty surprise. Because at least one boss is not pleased with your presence.
Which boss is it? Nefarian is the final boss in the Blackwing Lair, a raid for 40 players from Classic. The raid was released with patch 1.6 in July 2005. The black dragon is a direct descendant of the former Earth Warder Neltharion – also known as Deathwing.
Players discovered in early tests that Nefarian has gained new abilities. Now, however, the Dracthyr Callers are playable for everyone who owns Dragonflight, and you can see for yourself what the black dragon does to you.
What does Nefarian do with the Callers? In the fight against Neltharion, he has a special taunt for Callers. He insults you: “Caller, nothing but pitiful whelps. No wonder my father aborted your experiment.”
You also receive the debuff: “Pitiful Whelp,” which reduces damage dealt and healing by “99.9 (repeating, of course) %”. The debuff lasts for a few seconds and transforms you into a dragon whelp for its duration. What that looks like is shown in a short clip on Twitter.
If you enter the Blackwing Lair as a Caller, you can defeat almost all enemies there with one spell or strike, including bosses and even Nefarian. If you want to see for yourself how you are transformed, be careful not to kill the boss too early, but wait a bit.
In our guide, we reveal the best builds for DPS Callers and healers. Background on Deathwing and the Callers can be found in the short film series “Legacy”. We have embedded the first part here for you:
Dracthyr as “failed experiments” of Deathwing
Why does Nefarian do this? Nefarian has a special ability for each class, which he only casts when that class is present in the raid and affects the respective class. Despite his age, the boss received new abilities every time a new class entered the game:
- Death Knight: the entire raid is pulled in by “Death Grip”
- Monk: Monks roll uncontrollably around
- Demon Hunter: everything turns black, because Demon Hunters are “blind” – only the UI remains visible
Accordingly, there is also a new ability for Callers. However, there is historically more behind this. After all, the Dracthyr are guardians created by Neltharion.
In our special, we explain everything about the history of the dragons that you must know before Dragonflight. In the second part of “Legacy,” you will learn how Neltharion ultimately became Deathwing:
Some players note that the situation and Nefarian’s comments are quite ironic. Because the black dragon himself tries in his lair to achieve what Neltharion has already accomplished with the Callers: to unite the power of all dragonflights in one being.
Although Nefarian’s ambitions are also significantly larger because he wanted to create “real dragons” and not just Dracthyr, he remained unsuccessful – and is easily defeated by the “pitiful whelps”.
Dragonflight is set to release on November 29, bringing new dangers like the ancient dragon lady Raszageth, who serves as the boss for the first raid. In our hub, you will find all the important information about the expansion:
