The 76-year-old Scot Cath Bowie has 20,000 followers on Twitch, where she primarily plays Fortnite. The grandmother loves her community, but she says that in the beginning, there was a lot of negativity directed at her.

On the streaming platform, she shows almost exclusively Fortnite; in September 2024, she had an average of about 80 viewers, and in August, up to 3,000 people tuned in simultaneously (via SullyGnome).
In an interview with Independent, Bowie talked about her passion and the downsides of Twitch.

How did her love for Fortnite develop? Bowie was already a real gaming grandmother before Fortnite, playing popular games like Mario Kart, FIFA, and Minecraft with her grandchildren. However, when her grandson Lewis showed her the then brand-new Fortnite in 2017, it was love at first sight for the now 76-year-old:
I went into my grandson’s room, where he was playing on his PS4, and I saw Fortnite. Of course, I didn’t know what it was back then; he had to explain it to me, and people talk about love at first sight. Well, that was really it for me.

The Twitch streamer says she was completely fascinated by the game from the very first moment. When she is old, the 76-year-old says she will fondly remember her Fortnite game
. It was a day she will never forget.
After that, Bowie took every opportunity to game on her grandson’s account until she bought herself a PS4 and set up her own account. Eventually, she started showcasing her gameplay on her Twitch channel, where she now has 20,000 followers.

What experiences did she have on Twitch? Bowie is proud of the community she has built on Twitch. They are constantly chatting and everyone is friendly to each other. “Aside from my husband, this is my life,” says the Fortnite grandma.
I have people who joined me who did not know each other, and now they play together after I finish my stream or before. They are fantastic; I just love my community.
What I really like is that some people have really bad days in their lives. Some people are not doing so well; they may have problems, and there is always someone there to support them.
But it hasn’t always been so loving. As Bowie reports, she was surprised by the “toxicity” she encountered in the beginning. However, she now has people who look out for her and moderate content to keep her community a pleasant place.
The latest stunt from GrumpyGran1948 is a partnership with Ikea for their gaming collection Brännboll. Now she has a room completely furnished with the gaming furniture of the Swedish furniture store. Her grandson will be green with envy when he sees all the cool stuff his grandma has at Christmas, she is sure of that.
