Sons of the Forest finally has an official release date. But the already 7-year-old predecessor still excites many players. Tens of thousands, to be exact – just on Steam.
What kind of game is this? The Forest was already released in May 2014 in Early Access and finally officially in 2018. The game has captivated many players with its unique approach. You land somewhere on an island in the ocean after a plane crash and must survive – and find your son.
On your journey, you encounter strange mutants, cannibals, and other dangers while uncovering more about the background of this strange island. In the end, you are faced with the choice of how much you are actually willing to sacrifice for your child.
You play alone in individual sessions or in co-op with friends. The focus is less on classic survival elements such as building and crafting and more on the story. The Forest is also considered one of the best survival games for PC, PlayStation, and Xbox according to MeinMMO.
How many are currently playing The Forest? Currently, an average of 9,457 players are playing The Forest just on Steam, with a peak of 39,049 players in November 2021 and 31,820 in the last 30 days (via steamcharts.com). The game has consistently maintained 25,000-30,000 peak daily players since October.
These are only the players on Steam. Since November 2018, The Forest has also been playable on PS4 – 4 years after release. However, no statement can be made about the player count here.
The Forest has been quite popular since its release. After a drought in August and September with under 10,000 peak players, it is now experiencing a resurgence.
The Forest 2: Sequel “Sons of the Forest” causes hype with release
Where does the sudden interest in The Forest come from? In October, new screenshots of the sequel “Sons of the Forest” were shown – often simply called The Forest 2 among fans. This apparently sparked a new hype.
Already in April 2021, The Forest set a new record with 63,683 simultaneous players. At that time, the game was featured as deal of the week in the PS Store and had already generated traction with prominent YouTubers like Markiplier.
Now The Forest is once again in the minds of many fans, as the release of the sequel was announced with a new trailer:
When will Sons of the Forest be released? In the last scene of the video, the release date can briefly be seen: May 20, 2022. The last disturbing trailer was released at the end of 2020 and since then fans have eagerly awaited new information about the game. So far, there has been scarce information in 2021.
In Sons of the Forest, you apparently take on the role of one of the surviving children from the first part – possibly even that of the protagonist. You will then clean up on the island, but apparently also find new allies there.
