In Destiny 2, the expansion Beyond Light finally launches on November 10th. We summarize the most important points and clarify the last 7 questions you should know before release.
When does it finally start? With Destiny 2: Beyond Light launching tomorrow, on November 10th, the next major expansion for Bungie’s loot shooter arrives. With the weekly reset at 6:00 PM, it’s time: The expansion will then be released on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Stadia, and for PC via Steam.

What is Destiny 2: Beyond Light and where does the DLC take us?
Beyond Light marks the beginning of year 4 of Destiny 2. The story leads the Guardians to the unknown ice moon Europa. Along with us, many familiar faces set off for the DLC location:
- The famous Exo Stranger hasn’t had time for us since Destiny 1.
- Eris Morn rushes to the Stranger’s aid and continues her fight against the Darkness on Europa.
- The dubious Drifter plays a significant role in Beyond Light.

This is what the DLC story offers: The three fighters battle against the forces of Darkness, led by Eramis on Europa, with our help. The Fallen is the new Kell of Darkness and the new main villain in the story. Her hordes are changed by the Darkness and can use the new Stasis element.
Under the surface of Europa, plagued by snowstorms, old laboratory complexes from the Golden Age await. The research facilities are inhabited by Vex. Here, we also enter the new raid, the legendary Deep Stone Crypt and explore the origins of the Exo race.
Is there a preload for Beyond Light and how large is the DLC?
Can I start the download before release? Yes! On all platforms, you can download the expansion before its release on November 10, 2020.
- On PlayStation 4, all Guardians can load the required patch 3.0.0.1 since November 9th.
- Xbox One allows you to start the preload on November 10th – from tomorrow morning 4:00 AM, you can download the patch.
- On PC (Steam), the preload also starts on November 10th at 4:00 AM.

Together with the preload, the Destiny servers go offline in the morning hours of November 10th. If you want to prepare, you should hurry.
If you have any last-minute questions about preparation, MeinMMO has summarized the most important points:
How large is Beyond Light on my hard drive? The preload is 60-70 GB depending on the platform. This is about the size that Destiny 2: Beyond Light occupies on your hard drives.
This significantly reduces the required space on your consoles and PCs – by about 30-40%. Currently, Destiny 2 occupies a little over 100 GB on PlayStation 4. However, this is also linked to a complete reinstallation of the game, which is why the preload is so extensive.
Preordering Beyond Light – What editions are available?
Which edition should I buy? If you want to play the new expansion, you have several different versions to choose from. The DLC is included in every edition, and additionally, you can receive other extras like seasons or cosmetic items.
The following editions are available:
- Destiny 2: Beyond Light – Standard (€39.99)
- This version includes the new DLC, but nothing else.
- Destiny 2: Beyond Light – Standard + Season (€49.99)
- The DLC is included again
- you also get full access to the currently active season
- Also included is the Stranger’s weapon pack (exotic weapon “No Time to Explain” and its corresponding catalyst)
- Destiny 2: Beyond Light – Deluxe Edition (€69.99)
- All previous content and extras are included, along with
- All 4 seasons of year 4 (until autumn 2021)
- Additionally, the Stranger’s upgrade pack (exotic sparrow “Every Other Horizon” and an exotic ornament for “No Time to Explain”) and the exotic emote “Tap is Freeze”*
Additionally, the expansion Beyond Light is available in the Xbox Game Pass, as well as the Forsaken and Shadowkeep expansions. However, with the Game Pass, you will not have access to Season 12 or subsequent seasonal content; you will have to purchase these separately.
Whether you get the versions digitally or physically does not make a difference in content. Until release, all pre-orderers will also have immediate access to an exotic “Ghost Shell Crystal” and a legendary emblem right after purchase.
The various collector’s editions are no longer available. These included numerous physical goodies such as lore books or a bag.
What does Season 12 – Season of the Hunt offer?
Along with Beyond Light, the 12th season of Destiny 2: Season of the Hunt starts on November 10th. You can purchase this separately (around €10) or receive it as a bonus with a version of Beyond Light.
- The story of Season 12 leads you along with Osiris and Spider against the Hive and Oryx’s sister.
- Joining us is a new ally who was our sworn enemy until recently
- Many seasonal contents are also available to non-paying Guardians – such as the new start in the Cosmodrome
- Each season brings a new season pass (with a premium and free tracks) and a seasonal artifact to level up
- According to Bungie, the seasonal content will offer less FOMO, meaning they will be valid for longer, and you’ll miss out less permanently. The end date for Season 12 is in February 2021, then the still unknown Season 13 will start

What is Stasis and what can the new classes do?
One of the highlights of Beyond Light is the new Stasis classes. This gives Solar, Arc, and Void their first addition in 6 years.
The new powers are reminiscent of ice magic from other games. You can freeze enemies, shatter them into a thousand shards, and slow them down. You can even create barriers or new platforms from ice to cross chasms.

Stasis is the first power that comes not from Light but from Darkness. In the future, more such new supers are expected to be added to the game. These will also be listed separately next to our known Light classes in the menu. We will have to choose a path for our Guardians – but we can switch without consequences anytime, no worries.

What new features and changes come with the DLC?
With the new expansion, Destiny is also undergoing a significant overhaul. Here, we show you important changes.
- With Beyond Light, players get a completely new location: Europa and are allowed to re-enter the updated Cosmodrome from Destiny 1 – simultaneously, the game shrinks by 5 locations.
- The disappearing content will move into the so-called Destiny Content Vault. There, the content will be preserved and could return in a new form later
- Due to the Content Vault, the loot shooter can bring back the highlights from Destiny 1: The re-release of the iconic raid “Vault of Glass” is firmly planned
- All players will receive a new beginning, where new guardians learn the guardian’s daily life in the Cosmodrome – even veterans can play the missions in the Cosmodrome
- You can now obtain old exotics you missed from the kiosk
- The Gambit mode known from Forsaken will be overhauled: Starting with Beyond Light, you will no longer have Gambit and Gambit Prime, but only a PvEvP mode – which essentially picks the best parts from both variants

These are not all changes. Beyond Light also features a sandbox overhaul, numerous buffs and nerfs, and also the controversial weapon retirement.
What can Destiny 2: Beyond Light do on PS5 and Xbox Series X?
You can also play Destiny 2 on the new consoles from Sony, the PlayStation 5, and Microsoft’s Xbox Series X and Series S.
This is what Destiny can do on Next-Gen: You will benefit from numerous improvements, such as:
- Faster loading times
- finally 60 FPS
- 4K resolution
- Customizable field of view
- Cross-Gen Play: PS4 guardians can team up with players on PS5, and the same applies to Xbox guardians
Some of the improvements will be available to you right at launch on November 10th, but the big Next-Gen update is set to be released on December 8th.
Does it cost anything? No, if you own Destiny 2 on the current consoles PS4 or Xbox One X, the upgrade to Next-Gen is free for you. Also, real cross-play is planned for 2021.
