Defiance – Unsuccessful MMO Based on a Failed SciFi Series
Defiance launched in 2013 as a cool shooter MMO that was closely intertwined with the namesake science fiction series. The game and the series shared the same world, and events in the game were supposed to impact the series. However, all of this sounded better in theory than in practice, and one saw little of each product in the other.
This was perhaps partly because both products had entirely different settings. The series took place in St. Louis, while the game took place many miles away in San Francisco. Additionally, by the time the game launched, the first season of the series had already aired. The connection to the film was, therefore, always at best peripheral and far from the promised concept.
Defiance Survives Series Predecessor, but Just Barely
Furthermore, the Defiance series did not achieve much success. It was eventually canceled in 2015 after three seasons.
The game has continued to exist ever since and even managed to establish a kind of sequel to the series. The content of the planned fourth season was used in the game, and even today, Defiance occasionally receives new updates, such as the recently launched plague event.
Nevertheless, the outlook for Defiance is currently rather bleak. The player numbers are better than those of Battleborn, but more than a few hundred players are rarely online at the same time. It is possible that the game will soon follow the series’ path and disappear from screens.
