The new next-gen consoles offer significantly more performance than the previous consoles, the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4. This means you can play not only at much higher resolutions, but also enjoy significantly higher frame rates.
For gamers, a high refresh rate is especially important. Higher refresh rates make games run smoother. Latency also decreases, giving gamers a significant advantage especially in competitive gaming.

What You Need to Consider When Buying a Monitor
Gaming Monitors and HDMI 2.1: Many gaming monitors (still) do not support HDMI 2.1. However, many manufacturers such as Acer, Asus, and Samsung have already announced devices that will also offer HDMI 2.1 starting in 2021.
What Does HDMI 2.1 Offer? HDMI 2.1 mainly offers significantly higher data rates and various functions that are interesting for gamers. These include higher, variable frame rates and low latency, which are important for gamers.
What HDMI 2.1 means for next-gen consoles has been explained extensively here:
HDMI 2.0 and Gaming: With HDMI 2.0, you can play at 120 Hz even at 1440p, but only 60 Hz is available for 4K. Many modern titles like Assassin’s Creed Valhalla will not offer 120 Hz at 4K at launch anyway.
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla currently supports only 60 FPS at 4K resolution on the Xbox Series X and upscaled 4K with 60 FPS on the PS5 (via 4players.de). Watch Dogs: Legion will also run only at 60 FPS at 4K on the next-gen consoles (via wccftech.com). The MMO shooter Destiny 2 also offers only 60 FPS in 4K.
What is DisplayHDR? DisplayHDR is a certification that indicates how high the brightness of the screen is. This seal is intended to show buyers that the respective device can also display HDR content. Currently, there are three levels: DisplayHDR 400, DisplayHDR 600, and DisplayHDR 1000.
What is VRR? Variable Refresh Rate or VRR is a function provided by HDMI 2.1 and is also offered by FreeSync and G-Sync. This allows the console to adjust its refresh rate between 30 Hz and 144 Hz freely, thus avoiding disturbances known as screen tearing. Screen tearing occurs when the device’s signal does not match the output device’s frequency, resulting in “tearing of the image.”
Buying a Gaming Monitor for Xbox or PS5 with 4K: If you want to buy a gaming monitor, you have three options:
- You can either wait for gaming monitors that support HDMI 2.1, which will take until 2021.
- Or you buy a 4K monitor that at least supports HDMI 2.0, so you can either play natively at 4K with 60 FPS or at lower resolutions with correspondingly higher FPS. With HDMI 2.0 you can also enjoy games at 1440p with high frame rates up to 120 Hz.
- Alternatively, you can go directly for a TV set, where some devices already support the latest standard.

What Are We Presenting? Below, we will present several gaming monitors that support 4K and at least HDMI 2.0. This way, you can play at high settings and at least in Full HD and WQHD with 120 Hz.
Asus ROG Strix XG438Q (43 inches)
What the Monitor Offers: The ROG Strix XG438Q is a 43-inch device that offers 4K and 120 Hz. FreeSync is responsible for synchronizing the frame rate. However, the screen only offers HDMI 2.0. If you are playing at lower resolutions than 4K, you can still use 120 Hz here.
The gaming monitor offers a lot of features that you need as a gamer. These include FreeSync, which avoids image disturbance, ShadowBoost, which allows you to brighten individual areas of the image to see opponents, or GameFast, which aims to minimize latency. The picture quality is also successful. The illumination is somewhat weak.
PCMag states in its conclusion: “If a TV or a Nvidia ‘Big Format Gaming Display’ is too large for your games, but a normal monitor is too small, then the 43-inch Asus ROG Strix XG438Q is a desirable alternative for serious gamers. It is not cheap, but its panel is agile and striking.”

What the Monitor Offers: The device offers you high contrasts and an RGB color space with HDR 10. Additionally, it has a fast response time that is interesting for gamers.
The monitor only offers “60 Hz”, but for those who play continuously at 4K, 60 Hz should be sufficient. Because maintaining a stable frame rate at 4K is also a feat.
The screen supports FreeSync, but is also G-Sync compatible. Therefore, if you are using a Nvidia graphics card (GTX 10 series or newer), you can also use the monitor. According to Rtings.com, however, the HDR performance is only mediocre. Testers give the device a gaming score of 7.8/10.

Gaming Monitors 2021: What the Future Offers
Some manufacturers are currently preparing gaming monitors for 4K resolutions. These include, among others:
- Philips Momentum 328M1R: The monitor is expected to come in early 2021 and offers DisplayHDR 600 (brightness), an integrated sound system, and a response time of 4 ms. It also features HDMI 2.1 and FreeSync support.
- Acer Predator XB323QK: The monitor is expected to be available in late 2020/early 2021 and should offer “RGB LightSense” dynamic lighting effects. In addition, the device offers G-Sync, multiple HDMI ports, a USB-C port, and a USB 3.0 hub.
- Viewsonic Elite XG320U: The monitor offers 32 inches with 144 Hz and is certified with DisplayHDR 600. It also supports FreeSync. Furthermore, the device features HDMI 2.1. The Elite XG230U is expected to start in early 2021 at a price of around 1,000 Euros.
- Acer XV282K: Acer has announced a monitor that offers HDMI 2.1, 144 Hz, and 4K resolution. The IPS panel offers DisplayHDR 600 and built-in speakers. The monitor is officially available from January 2021. Additionally, the device supports a variable refresh rate (VRR) from 48 to 144 Hz.
- ASUS ROG “HDMI-2.1 Monitors”: Asus also presented new gaming monitors with HDMI 2.1 certification at the end of August. These should offer HDMI 2.1, provide 4K at up to 120 Hz, and also become available at the end of 2020 or early 2021.
This means that in the future there will be several new and powerful devices on the market that can also handle the corresponding resolutions.
