What is GTA Online? Grand Theft Auto V is the latest installment in the popular GTA series and has been on the market since 2013. In GTA, you play as a small-time criminal who commits various crimes to make money and causes all kinds of mischief.
GTA Online is essentially the multiplayer mode of GTA V. In the online part, players can explore the world together, complete missions, or rob banks, casinos, or other cash-rich establishments.
“Heists” or robberies, car races, and the casino play significant roles here. Players spend much time, meet others, and do things together. However, this isn’t the reason for its popularity on Twitch.
How does it perform on Twitch? In 2020, GTA V is among the staples on Twitch and is almost always found somewhere in the top 10 or top 5 of most-watched games. Since May, it has accumulated nearly 500 million hours of watch time with an average of 115,062 viewers. However, it wasn’t always like this.
How did GTA Online benefit from Twitch? Although the game has been released for seven years now, the big Twitch breakthrough came only in March 2019. That’s when GTA V suddenly became number 1 in the Twitch charts.
The reason for this was the emergence of role-play servers at that time. Instead of engaging with the offerings of GTA Online, players can slip into the roles of bankers, employees, doctors, or doner kebab shop owners if they wish.
Many streamers embraced this opportunity and showcased humorous scenes from role-playing along with the characters they portrayed. By December 2019, GTA V was gaining traction on Twitch, and today it has become a heavyweight in the top ranks of the charts.
The trend even attracted celebrities more commonly known from film and television. The German comedian Kaya Yanar plays GTA V frequently and enjoys and regularly showcases it to his thousands of viewers. There, he sometimes plays his already known roles like Hakan, Ranjid, or Francesco.
