WoW Classic
What is WoW Classic? In August 2019, the Classic version of the massive MMORPG World of Warcraft was released. It rolls back time and resets (almost) everything to its state at launch in 2005.
In various phases, more content is released in exactly the order in which it appeared when WoW was new.
How did it perform on Twitch? Classic has provided numerous memorable moments on Twitch and still does. Just in October 2020, a streamer became sadly famous for showing his cluttered apartment and then getting praised for cleaning up his mess.
Before that, especially hardcore grind sessions turned heads, like players on the verge of breaking in PvP or the first player to reach level 60. His notoriety likely got to his head, as shortly thereafter he became the most hated man in WoW Classic.
However, the commitment of the streamers meant a significant success for the game itself. WoW Classic was the most-watched game on Twitch and the famous WoW streamer Asmongold his cursed king:
How did WoW Classic benefit from Twitch? There is no concrete number of subscribers playing World of Warcraft and Classic, as both can be played with the same subscription. However, we know that the subscription numbers significantly increased due to Classic. Twitch apparently helped to raise awareness around the launch and especially the preceding beta.
The tests of Classic were extremely popular and quite a few streamers had access initially. This even led to players accusing Blizzard of only inviting streamers to improve reach.
In the end, there was such a rush on the servers that players were stuck in long queues at release. Not too bad, since this kind of belongs to the classic feeling …
