Twitch is now an important medium for marketing games. However, there are some games that have particularly benefited from the streaming platform – in some cases years after their release. MeinMMO presents seven such games.
What kind of games are these? Twitch can not only ensure that politicians get a lot of attention, but also games. This is what the platform was originally intended for. And here, Twitch even has a significant influence on development.
Our list is about games that experienced a boost due to Twitch, whether in pure attention or in actual player numbers. It’s not about a specific genre, but spans all kinds of games.
We particularly focus on games that have momentarily or even long-term reached the top rankings of the most-watched games due to certain circumstances and thus became better known.
For each game, we explain what it is, how it benefited from Twitch, and possibly its development through Twitch. The list is not complete and not sorted.
Among Us
What is Among Us? The principle of Among Us is somewhat similar to the popular game “Werewolves of Miller’s Hollow,” where werewolves try to eliminate villagers disguised. That’s how Among Us works too.
In Among Us, a group of technicians must complete certain tasks to get a spaceship up and running. To create tension, there is one or more impostors who disguise themselves as crew members and want to kill the others.
The crew must identify who the impostors are and vote them off the ship into space or lava to protect themselves. The crew wins if all impostors are found and loses if too many members die.
How did it benefit from Twitch? Among Us is actually older and dates back to 2018, when it was released on Android, iOS, and PC. Thus, it is also an indie and mobile game that unexpectedly achieved success.
However, on Twitch, it suddenly became a huge hit in August 2020. An announcement for a second part likely led to a streamer showcasing it, triggering a chain reaction.
In the game, wild accusations and discussions arise via voice chat about who might have killed whom and how. For viewers, this is a tremendous pleasure. They can watch their favorite streamers completely freak out.
The hype on Twitch has resulted in a player record for Among Us on Steam. Due to the success, the developers even decided not to produce a second part, but instead to further develop Among Us.
